i am riding the New York Subway (that looks a lot like the Moscow subway) with Michael Douglas and two of my friends. For some reason Michael Douglas and I have to split off from my friends so we agree to meet at a different station, seven stops West of where we originally were. We meet on the platform, which is all in blue hues. I say that the coloring of the platform is exactly like the color in Petrov-Vodkin's paintings, with a little bit of allusion to Chagall. We have to get back to my house, but first I want food. At this point Michael Douglas has transmongrified into someone else entirely, who is my friend in the dream, but I don't know him in real life. We are walking through Washington Square Park; it's dark. I see a hotdog stand, but it's closing down. We walk into some fast food/deli place where there is only little bits of food left. I see old muffins and swiss Danishes, then at the other end of the place there is a salad bar. I want a Caesar Salad, but not all of the ingridients are there. There is a bin of greens with what I think are chicken bits, but upon closer inspection, turn out to be almond slivers. I am hungry, but can't choose what I want to eat because all the choices are not quite what I want.

interpretations?

i would say that you are torn between your ethnic heritage/that culture and popular American culture, but are not 100% sure of either--people changing into other people, NY vs Moscow subway, baked goods vs salad (and the salad is insufficient, too)--all speak to being torn and/or dissatisfied. this may be too personal, but i'd say it represents needing to integrate your roots with the world you currently inhabit.

i don't interpret dreams, though, usually.

lots of my dreams have places that are theoretically in the US and look like Russia--i am sure it is an ongoing issue expressed in that kind of dream locale bricolage, but usually it's one layer of any dream that i have, rarely the main issue being worked out by my unconscious...

interesting choice, 'bricolage'--kind of telling in itself...

i would argue that the locale is generally THE most important consistent element of a dream. for years all my nightmares took place in the same (non-real) city--in one dream where i was running through a high-rise asylum, for instance, i looked out a window and spied in the distance an amphitheatre that had been the location of a previous nightmare. when i worked through a couple pertinent real-life issues, i stopped visiting that city in my sleep.

so, i would say that the dream probably addresses something other than Russia, but you realize that the Russia/America split informs a lot of your decisions, or is the field upon which they are played, if you will. i think.

I say Freud was wrong and that dreams are just your mind having a kuuh-rrazy par-tay! But you totally want to jump Mike D's bones, subconsciously. Or is it consciously?

I think it means that you love me and want to sodomize me, which is ok, but your other friends might think you're gay.

The subway is your broken tongue, which betrays the beauty that your eyes take in; transforming Chagall blue into porcelain tile. Michael Douglas is the patron saint of the middle to which you do not belong, a familiarity that only arises from loss. A friend that you don't truly know, he can only offer you banal and unfufilling semblance of the average. But look closer anthrochica, the chicken bits are really almond slivers, fruits of the divine Tree of Life, carved into a rod on the twilight of the sixth day of creation and handed down from Adam to Enoch, Shem, Moses...and now you.

Japhy, natch.

Hence the J thing.

But really, isn't it better when you get mysterious interpreations of your dreams from mysterious people.

Unfortunately, Japhy is not mysterious. But he does have power again.

Huzzah!

I can't analyze this dream yet, but you've given me an idea to create an extremely funny dream interperetation chart for the next issue of the Fear Not zine. Thanks!

Well, it will only be similar to the problems chart in that it will be printed on paper, and it will be funny.

see, now, mysteryfood has gone and done stole my thoughts. darn you, mysteryfood!

i was also going to say that it clearly means you are so in love with her, it almost borders on obsession. but now that just seems so redundant and unoriginal, so i won't. and besides, i don't actually know either of you, so who am i to say that it isn't a shared dream between the two of you, and your (as of yet) unrequited love for me.

i'm just glad, for your sake, that there weren't any pigeons or pigeon bits.

Douglas isn't old, he's seasoned.

Jeremy Irons is seasoned; Michael Douglas is old. He's seasoned with oldness. He is fortified old.

I never liked him much to begin with.

yes, i will send out a memo next time my unconscious concocts some sort of gastological Michael Douglas scenario so that everyone can stock up on candles.
