I am back from Un Lun Dun and will post soon about that, but in the meantime, a question for all you media-savvy people...is there an easy way to subscribe to some kind of news aggregate engine with multiple keywords? Like, say, I only want news stories emailed to me if they are about police raids in Boston or only stories about arson in Brooklyn, etc. etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

In the meantime here is Fionn throwing rocks down by Putney Bridge on the Thames riverbanks.

on Google News there is a "Fast Flip" option that I think you put keywords into. I haven't really explored Google News that much, but I would bet it has a lot of programmable options.

Google Alerts. Just enter careful search terms and specify that you only want news, not "comprehensive" which will give you automatic web searches.

You can also get alerts as an RSS feed, I see, which you could read in Bloglines or Google Reader and receive less emails.

Seconded! I use it to see when people do a search for my full name. It creeps me out to think that total strangers sometimes do a search for my full name online and Google alerts me when it happens.

I did not realize you could use google alerts for this. How do you do that? or is that specific to a website? like, if you have your own website you can do that? or can you just do it in general? I poked around but didn't see an option for that.

You can use Google Alerts for just about anything you want. Just go here: http://www.google.com/alerts and plug in whatever search term you want. For example, you can put in your full name or something you want to search for like "home birth" or "pinhole photography." Set up how often you want it to alert you and it sends the alerts to your e-mail address until you tell it to stop.

If someone does a search for your name, Google will alert you and it shows you what web page the person opened in the search. Also, if someone puts something on the internet about you (like your photo) it will alert you via e-mail.
