How it is possible that I don't have a fever, yet feel totally in throes of a fever. That feeling that your skin burns and hurts and the chills coming from this deep internal sense that your body is unable to regulate its temperature. But (I don't have a thermometer handy), my forehead and cheeks feel cool and normal.

Do they feel normal to you or someone else? You may not be able to feel your own fever. Also, I have had fevers where my head felt cool and my belly got hot, and martin would say "you don't have a fever" and I'd say, "I DO!" and then we would eventually test it with technology and I would be right. Feel your belly?

I had that last night. The sensation that I was sick with a fever, just not full blown. My mother blessed me with an exceptionally strong immune system so that I get over most things that put people out for weeks sometimes in half a day so I was wondering if what I had was swine flu, lol. I feel fine now.

Ok, perhaps this is the universe sticking its tongue out at all of us and saying, "Nyah. I made it worse."

I may have seen this somewhere...

On the off chance that you wake up tomorrow feeling like monkeys went to work on you with wooden mallets just know that forced-hydration, disciplined sleep and NyQuil will get you through this in about 4 more days.

(I have no idea how that sleep part is possible as a parent though... that fascinates me. Good luck!)

EDIT: NEXT DAY - What you described sounded exactly like my first real 4 or 5 hours with the h1n1 strain. I'm curious to know if it is really that uniform an experience. (through the highly methodical approach of comparing TWO instances)

did you get tested and that's how you knew it was H1N1? My feverish symptoms are gone, but my body still hurts, throat pain has subsided a bit, but now I feel the start of congestion in my chest, that deep feeling that stuff is coagulating, but I can't cough it up yet. I usually get bronchitis once a year, in Nov/Dec, but it's not usually preceded by a sore throat and a total wipe-out.

I'm vicariously in pain reading that. I would highly recommend doing a search on what to expect w/ h1n1. I think there's two ways it runs it's course. I had the easy way - a straight run from bad to worse to better. I also read there were bad to worse to better to EVEN worse before getting better and that 2nd way was a lot rougher. I seriously hope I'm wrong here, btw. I wrote a detailed post last week after I pulled out inthe off chance that people might want info.

To answer your questions though: The CDC has great epidemiology stats on their website so I checked my region for what was walking into hospitals that week with "flu like symptoms." (maybe the EU or the Dutchies do too?) Anyhow, of all positive results for influenza, something like 98% were h1n1 in the SE U.S. Seasonal flu just isn't down here yet. It is possible that I could have been the exception but that seems highly improbably considering my lack of recent travel.

Take care of yourself.
