me: we don't have cake!
Fionn: we have cake.
me: no, we don't have cake.
Fionn. we HAVE cake.
me: no, we don't. we don't have cake.
Fionn: we have it, we have cake.
me: no, we don't have cake at home.
Fionn (thinks for a moment): get some at the store!
me: you know what, maybe I will bake a cake later today.
Fionn: and put it on a plate!
me: yes, then we can put it on the plate.
Fionn: NOT IN THE BOWL! (dissolves in maniacal giggles).

After I posted this, theophile verbally footnoted that entire exchange for me, so it is less arbitrary than it had seemed to me at first. Apparently there is cake, it was asked for for a long time, bought at the store, the need to put it on a plate had been impressed upon young F., and at one point said cake had ended up in a bowl (with bad results?)
