It's a campaign to draft Al Gore to run in 2004. And no, I am not being ironic, sarcastic, or snarky. I think it's the best idea ever and the best hope we have for ousting Bush out of the White House. I will volunteer any help I can to their cause. They have an informative section on political drafts and how they worked in the past. And of course there is a secret part of me that hopes that Gore's recent absence from politics is part of the strategy: by avoiding the political arena for the time being he circumnavigates the spineless devastation that has befallen the Democratic Party and can, at the 11th hour, reemerge to take the center stage. According to an international Zogby poll, he is the only Democrat who comes close to Bush's numbers in terms of possible reelection. Not to mention the fact that he is, in fact, our elected president. And I am SICK AND TIRED of people telling protesters to "get over it" with regard to the stolen election. I really think this campaign has a chance, because I think there are a lot of people who are indignant and pissed off and feel that he should have rightfully been our President, and hopefully that number of people grows as Bush digs himself deeper and deeper into the mess of blood and stupidity and economic ravaging of America. Fuck, I am going to write Al Gore a letter. For real. I really urge everyone, check out the website; I rarely write anything constructive here, but I feel so strongly about this, there is no trace of glibness in me w/r/t this.
p.s. I don't want to get into any arguments on here about how Gore does not deserve people's trust because he gave up, or how now that the Democratic Party is roadkill, it's the time to focus on the Green Party or the Independent Party to undermine/challenge the two-party system. The way I feel is: a) Gore did fight, he fought for 36 days by himself, without the support of all the people who are now accusing him of quitting and b) In my opinion, we are in the middle of a crisis, and while there are always radicals who want to seize the historical moment to make their own revolutionary point, the 2004 election should be about getting Bush out of the White House. 2004 is NOT the time for faction politics; another world is possible, but it's not going to get created with Bush in office for another four years, and that's what is going to happen if everyone on the left does not present a united front and put aside their differences until the next election and work towards the common goal of ousting Bush before we don't have elections any more at all, period. I understand the point of people who want to get third-party candidates on the ballot, and I understand the validity of the term "clothesspin vote" but vote splitting now could be detrimental. Sadly, the situation we are in now dictates that the next election is not about issues or tranforming the electoral process. Yes, the fucked-uppedness of it all obviously originates with and is enabled by the stupid two-party system. But that's the reality for the moment and we have to work within its parameters. There are only two platforms for 2004, and they are for Bush and against Bush, and everyone on the side of the latter has to do whatever is necessary to achieve that goal.

An explosion at a Baghdad market on Friday killed about 50 people, many of them women and children, according to medical officials and journalists in the city.
