What do you think, Acer or ASUS?

Or maybe Lenovo?

Talk to me...

I love my little EeePC. It's got enough zing to do the job and because I can't stand lugging the bigger ones around is just right for me. If you don't use resource-hogging applications, it's super handy and uses the latest standard for wifi making it a great companion for a trip to your local coffeehouse. They're really easy to upgrade too.

As a peripheral issue, StarOffice or OpenOffice can be less than '100% compatible' with M$ Office sometimes, despite claims to the contrary.

hmmm, I've generally been able to convert between Open Office and M$ with no problems...

Thanks for the recommendation!

depends on tasks you're going to use it for. generally, I'd say, Lenovo - Asus - Acer, but as I already said it depends.

basically word processing, internet, and some photo editing. I do video on my desktop, and I don't play computer games, so I am hoping the 160GB hard drive on any of them would suffice...

So there is a display size you should take into consideration as well. And weight - wheter you are going to travel a lot ar mainly working at home. I do not like acers personally. Lenovo is most reliable thing for now and have a quite good service. Asus is somwere in the middle between them; if you are going make video - EEE is not your cup of tea, the display is quite small, and CPU usually is not very fast.

I'd probably recommend to take a look on Dell laptops - they have very good price-quality ratio.

If you have any thoughts about specific models - I might could pr ovide some pros and contras, if it could help.

(I apologize for my English here - I am not a native speaker.)

right, I am not looking to do video on a laptop, I use my iMac for that. I have had a Dell laptop for the past two years, and based on its performance, I don't want a Dell product ever again. I also specifically want a netbook, for ease with travel. I basically want something with a 10'' screen, in the $300 range, with fast wifi, and preferably a webcam.

there's also msi.
i don't know if you'll be getting linux or windows, but i'm fine with windows xp, so i went with the asus eee 1000 ha. typing on it now on my balcony. i haven't fully tested the battery life but it's supposed to be about 9 hours. i haven't tried the others so i can't compare, but i've had this about 2 months & been really pleased with it.

I haven't heard anything at all about MSI and I don't know anyone who has it.

I think the ones I was looking at have XP built in, which would be an improvement over Vista, which came with my in-decline Dell laptop (which never lasted more than 2 hours without being plugged in).

I *love* my MSI. Very fast and the battery lasts forever.

can you please be more specific about the length of "forever"? Also does yours have a webcam?

Yes it does have a webcam; not a very high quality one, but it seems to work okay. As far as the battery goes, I have a six cell, and on a full charge I can be online via wi-fi for at least five to six solid hours. I can be watching streaming content, working with editing software, etc. The battery does not drain easily. I usually charge the computer overnight, and then have it on periodically throughout the day, letting it hibernate between uses. I very rarely have to plug it back in during the day.

I looked at a few MSI models after your review, but in the end decided that I like the way Acer looks the best...totally shallow, but "cute computers" a weakness of mine (for my own idiosynchratic values of "computer cuteness").

I do not think they make my model of Acer any more (Linux/OpenOffice, 8G flash RAM, no hard drive, $300 Canadian) - which is too bad, 'cause at that price it couldn't be beat.

I think the standard now is 160GB for basically all of them, and refurbished ones go for $250-$280 US. I would definitely want a hard drive, although your Video Mirror thing was cool!

i don't like lenovo. my asus works ok, pretty sturdy too - though macs are so much more nicely designed.

I would get a Mac in a heartbeat, but my budget doesn't agree.

Why don't you like Lenovo?

I have the Lenovo x200 tablet and LOVE IT. LOVE. IT.

I recently got an Acer, and I'm quite smitten with it... but I have no experience with other laptops, so I don't know if that helps. For $300 or whatever it was, it's quick and tiny, so I can carry it pretty easily. The battery life is around 6 hours constant use, which is more time than I generally want to spend on a computer at a time anyway, and the keyboard isn't maddening.
