+/- update
May. 5th, 2009 01:38 pm+ submitted the two postdoc applications I have been working on for the last couple of months. Submitted one of them a day early. Unprecedented!
+ submitted an abstract for a conference literally at the last minute (11.59 pm of the day of the deadline). A different sort of satisfaction!

akozorez and Lena Nemka came for a lovely visit. We drank wine in the garden, traipsed around an abandoned mine, and flaneured around Antwerp for an afternoon.
- visit too brief, alas.
+
akozorez's early birthday present to me, which consisted of her going halfsies with me on a lens I have been coveting FOREVER, a super-wide-angle beauty
+ which I look forward to using in Morocco, a month from tomorrow!
On Queen's Day there was a huge flea market/festival in the city park. It's a day of fleamarkets/sidewalk sales all across the country (my friend A. tried to talk me into going to Amsterdam with her and her friends--apparently every year they go to the chichi neighborhoods where people sell fancy stuff for dirt cheap outside their houses--I couldn't because that was the day that my guests were arriving, but next year for sure!) But we went to join the celebrating and thrifting masses in the park, and procured a tricycle and a travel-friendly, collapsable pram for Fionn. I also snagged a super-cute bag for myself, it's like a little purse with wooden hoops to hold it with, with a texture that's like a quilt made from several retro-looking fabrics/patterns. Adorable! Then onto Australian ice-cream for mango and chocolate milkshakes.

Fionn having a big adventure

he is really into dandelions right now

little Dutch boy

us
we got a postcard from his kindergarten today (a cat petting a snail--cute but maybe a little bit disturbing because I keep thinking the cat is going to eat the snail--I told this to
theophile and he quoted to me that "childhood is cannibals and psychotics vomiting down your throat")--he is starting kindergarten next week!!
OH, also, have any of you seen "The Room"? We watched it the other night, and it causes the same kind of epistemological vertigo as "Trapped in the Closet" and it is AMAZING. I hear there are Rocky Horror type screenings of in in L.A.--I would totally go!

The Room
Date: 2009-05-05 03:11 pm (UTC)Audience responses are many, but the two coming most immediately to mind are the joyfully lobotomized greeting of Denny whenever he appears ("Denny!") and the universal tossing of plastic spoons whenever that picture of flatware is in frame.
What I really like, though I can't remember any of the specific ways it's accomplished, is the will with which the film's own villification of its lead actress is chucked back into the lead actor's teeth. "I treat you like a princess, and you stab me in the back!" indeed.

Date: 2009-05-05 04:03 pm (UTC)Prob'ly just because so much of the damned thing takes place in that one room.
