1. I went to the huge fleamarket that happens in this large expo building a couple of times a year. Snagged a few things, including one of those lamps with spinning decals inside that project images onto the "walls" of the lamp for a Euro--Fionn was entranced. The woman asked me heb je een baby? and when I said yes, she threw in a soft toy thing (I am not quite sure what sort of a creature it is, taxonomically, but it will be transferred into Fionn's possession just as soon as it makes its way through a laundry cycle). I got a cute fall/spring jacket, AND a turquoise-colored leather jacket that fits me perfectly (5 EU and 10 EU, respectively).

2. I found a place here where I can take a basic jewelry-making/metal work course next year, which I've wanted to do forever.

3. I discovered that Chumbawamba did an English version of that Italian partisan song, "Bella Ciao" that I love

and

In My Soviet Childhood, in the young pioneer choir, we sang an adaptation of that song, made into "mama ciao"--but I couldn't find that on youtube...

I love Bella Chao. I sing the traditional version to Maiya with it changed to "Maiya Zhou". I'd never heard the Chunbawamba version before. Thanks!

Here's a few Chinese remakes...

haha, that is so cute! "Oh Maiya Zhou, Maiya Zhou, Maiya Zhou Zhou Zhou!"

Fionn is really into it, he joins in for the "ciao, ciao, ciao" enthusiastically. I have been singing it to him intermittently in Russian, but I think I am going to try and learn and teach him the original Italian version.

I can sing Bella Ciao in Spanish. I went to this little commie language school in the Guatemalan highlands, staying with members of a coffee growers collective, and every morning we woke up and sang this song.

ha, your Guatemala language school sounds cooler than my Guatemala language school--which was fine, but we sang, like, children's songs.

One of my favorite memories is singing Bella Ciao with a bunch of Italians on a 12 hour bus journey to a Zapatista village during the Zapatista Encuentro of 1996. We sang it at the hippie summer camp my parents sent me to too. Love that song.

I love everyone's memories of singing this song in the randomest settings!

I encountered it on the soundtrack for a German pop movie from the early 00's, sung by Anita Lane, who used to be a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds... that's fairly random. If you want a copy, let me know. I haven't sent you a CD in ages.

I would love a CD! But also if you have the file on your computer, can you email it to me?

I've never encountered that song before - or spent much time considering the arts beyond letters in Resistance Europe. This is really interesting to me. Thanks for posting this.

I actually learned it in... Italy.
Um... does the Mama Ciao version have all the Streets of Laredoey death references?
