So I hopped over a couple of borders to attend the carnival in Venice. I took about a million photos, and I'll post them over the next few days. The first batch is the Farewell to Meat itself in all its glory: the pageantry, the colors, the masks! A lot of these are from the San Marco Square, which is the golden heart of the carnival, an amazing spectacle that I was afraid would be this super-touristy super-commodified space, and of course there were tons of tourists, but it also somehow transcended that--there were there were all these people in insane outlandish costumes, like living moving statues, but walking around, and also people in just masks and these inbetween costumes, and lots of punks and hippies and old ladies in masks and fully-costumed ladies in wheelchairs, and nuns, both costumed and real. And it was super-sunny and some lovely live music was playing, and people were throwing confetti everywhere, and all in all it was total effervescence. It was actually the one place that seemed totally noncommodified. No one was trying to sell anything, people were just gawking and taking pictures and spontaneously waltzing, and lots of thrilled kids!

The picture of the little girl in white is just perfect! It makes me think of the Carnival when I was living in Greece. I wish I'd taken more pictures!

I lived there for a year after I finished college, from july 2005 to june 2006. I meant to go back for another year that september, but I got caught up living in Savannah instead. I'm really itching to go back, though - there's so much I didn't see!

whee! you did what i'd been dreaming about doing last week!

love the ship, and the feathers. fragmentedly-seen photographs are often so wonderful; these are no exception.

and this: "I was afraid would be this super-touristy super-commodified space, and of course there were tons of tourists, but it also somehow transcended that--"

is exactly how i feel about venice period. it is a magical, magical place.

she cracked me up so much. her parents were obviously trying to be Very Serious and she defiantly licked that ice-cream cone in the most getting-messy, flamboyant way possible.

you got such great eye contact with people. i wish people could see how insane it was in that square, it was a fight to get anyone's attention and people in this photos are looking straight out you like you were the only one there. that is talent. once again...bravo, and thanks for the invite! xo,c
