I am unclear about the peanut butter thing: the shipment in question was flagged because it contained "filthy, putrid or decomposed substance" later identified as metal fragments. Is that in addition to salmonella, or did that cause salmonella? And if it did, how does metal cause salmonella? It seems like the descriptions would refer to a biological substance, not metal. Can someone clarify?

In a startling revelation on Saturday, the Atlanta Journal Constitution said the president of Peanut Corp., Stewart Parnell, serves on an industry advisory board that helps the U.S. Department of Agriculture set quality standards for peanuts.

are you startled? I am not startled. I am the opposite of startled.

I'm not startled, I'm revelated.

Also, I think it's just sloppy reporting. I'm assuming that there were filthy, decomposed, putrid substances, and metal fragments, and salmonella. A kind of rich, peanut buttery smorgesbord of contaminants. Yum!

at the very least you and the kiddies should't be eating anything on this list:
http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html#recalls

Also since I think you shop at Trader Joe's:

http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2009/01/26/Trader_Joes_expands_peanut_butter_recall/UPI-36591232994816/

but I don't think it's comprehensive, since last I heard they were also pulling their Thai frozen dinners, and that's not on that list.

Honestly, I wouldn't touch peanut butter in the US at all right now until this is over--they originally said that jar peanut butter is okay because this shipment was only sold for additives/flavoring, but who the hell knows--they keep adding new stuff every day and more and more people are getting sick with salmonella.

Hmm. Well, at least from what I can see the two distributors that I have peanut butter from aren't listed (ConAgra Foods (Peter Pan Peanut Butter) & Albertson's (Shaw's Brand Peanut Butter)), but that doesn't mean much, I imagine.

Crap. That sucks.

OT but I wanted to ask you about your congo blog--I have a student who is doing a project on DRC and I wanted to suggest it to her as a resource...

if you feel fine, you are probably fine, just don't eat any more for now!

I ate the last one this morning, didn't check the wrapper...

Sure, I haven't posted much that is public lately other than news items, but feel free.
