those of you who have read Helprin's "The Winter's Tale," which cover do you like better? The one with the horse-as-constellation over snowy evening Manhattan, or the one with the beams of light pouring in through the windows of Grand Central? The first time I read it, it was the latter edition, now I am rereading the one with the horse that I picked up at The Strand. I honestly cannot decide which one I like better. I think I like them equally. They are both such good representations of what I love about the book (and what I love in general, which has more to do with *why* I love the book).

I also found this in google images

but it seems so subpar to me as to not merit inclusion in this informal poll

the cover of the Russian translation is horrid.

Horse as constellation.

Never has fever been made so languidly romantic. The blue of the cover kind of counterweighted the idea of heat, making contemplation indefinite. I was lost in the reeds of that thought, thanks to that cover.

Also, bue-tocks.

it's true about the fever. Makes you want to hallucinate feverish dreams.

I found it interesting that so many internet threats on the book feature a common reaction by the readers that they couldn't finish it because it was like a too-rich pastry.

I read it with the horse. Loved loved loved the early twentieth century half, the fever in the Dakota, the oyster houses and Bayonne oyster diggers, and the snow. Viciously disappointed at the right wing screed in the turn of the millennium half. THe first half > Veronica. The second << Veronica. Sigh.

yeah, I had a similar reaction to the first half vs. the second half. I am trying to see on this reading if the second half has more to it.

I love that book too!

And I have a recommendation for you... My boss gave me Shadow of the Wind, and it jumped heads over most things I've read in the last decade right into my Top 5. Find it, read it.

Oh, and the cover question, I'll go with Grand Central, but that's because the horse constellation copy I got at a library booksale was a mass market instead of a nice, heavy trade paperback. I just prefer trade paperbacks. Chr*s took the mass market, which he says is better for reading on planes.
