Your 'found architecture' photos are so often striking for colour and composition.

The first shot strongly resembles the mansion in Tintin's The Seven Crystal Balls--which, given how close you are to Belgium, probably shouldn't surprise me.

well, this castle is in Belgium...do you have a picture of the castle you mention?

From tintin.com, you can see the drawn panel in the middle:

I think that the volume I have on it at home includes a reference photo of the house Herge modeled the drawing on...I'll check tonight.

You need to claim that house in the name of all things beautiful and bring us all in to fix it up!

I already claimed it! So on the esoteric-photographic-phantasmogorical strata of the universe it is already ours...the matrix of the material reality is really inconsequential...although Belgian squatting laws are not nearly as progressive as the Dutch ones.

Those are insanely beautiful. You must claim the castle as yours!

Those are amazing. Totally.

Any idea why this one's abandoned?

Date: 2008-11-24 05:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lapsedmodernist.livejournal.com
it was used by the gov't for military things, and then was abandoned as a part of budget cuts in the 1990s.

Wow, beautiful.

I don't know how you feel about horror movies but these photos remind me of the sets of the "torture-porn" genre (one of which, I'm not sure which one, I watched against my will while hallucinating feverishly in a hotel room bed in Goroka--Emily was entranced by the movie and watched it on repeat). #2 and #4 especially are very torture-porn unheimlich.

If you can bear to watch those films there is probably something zeitgeisty to be said about them + urbex.

I think torture-porn films have a "grunge" cinematography sometimes, which can have the same look as some of the editing in this batch of photos. Also, of course, Hostel = Eurosetting. (I found Hostel interesting, by the way, in terms of anxieties about globalization, legacies of cultural imperialism, etc.) what was the plot of the movie?

How does a place like this become abandoned? I wonder if it's still structurally sound enough to be renovated.

Date: 2008-11-24 05:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lapsedmodernist.livejournal.com
cost-cutting! I assume it could be salvaged, but it would require a lot of work. Some of the floors were missing, and the stairs were pretty rickety. Still, structurally sound enough that the floor didn't collapse under me.

Absolutely loved these pictures! What a find - but from viewing your work over the past year or so I'm not too surprised. Love the angle of your ceiling photo. :)

You still Etsy-ing prints? I may actually have some budget for making my apartment less like a white box in the forseeable future.

I haven't put more stuff on Etsy at the moment for logistical reasons BUT I am going to put a bunch of stuff up for sale through livejournal soon (so that I can handle the print orders/mailings while I am in the US in the second half of December and people can get them for the holidays if they want). Stay tuned!
