another denizen of the playground
Jul. 13th, 2008 11:57 pmyes, I know, more baby photos. Sadly, between being a "stay-at-home mom" for the summer, and the packopalypse engulfing our apartment, I think the next time I will be exploring abandoned buildings will be in Europe. As Marx said, the base dictates the superstructure, so, um, think of this cornucopia of baby photos as my own personal social realism of this summer. And I promise y'all abandoned castles and such in the near future, that is separated from me solely by Hercules' lost thirteenth labor involving ALL OF MY BOOKS (and I have so many books that my books have their own books), and a transatlantic night flight.
Anyway, Fionn hung out with this young lady on the playground the other day. Girls love him--or, perhaps, it's selection bias, since he mostly socializes with Serena and Maiya. She reminded me of an illustration to this children's book of Romanian fairy tales that I had growing up, terrifying and exhilarating stories, that I was actually thinking of in any case, because I recently realized that my love for Shiori Matsumoto (see my lj user icon) is totally due to the fact that the young girls she paints remind me of the illustrations from that Romanian book, which was so formative for me. I will try to scan them in...
Oh, and also--I found my lost treasure! When I was 19 and spending the summer in England, I bought a postcard in a small town called Totnes, featuring H.C. Andersen sitting behind a desk, and the rest of the postcard was populated with various characters and items from his fairy tales--some of them tiny, all of them rendered in dusty silver. I treasured that postcard, and then it vanished, for years--I don't remember for how long, but I remember telling
theophile about it when I first met him--about how I used to have this postcard and lost it--so it must have been gone for 3 years at least. Anyway, I found it inside one of my books (or one of my books' books), and I am so, so happy that it has returned to me. I used to spend hours looking at it and drifting off into daydreams. It had that hypnotic effect on me.
Okay, but I am no Tristram Shandy, so to get to the point, here are the pictures I wanted to post:
