I am 30 today. I have lived in five (soon to be six) countries on three continents, and traveled through fifteen more. Along the way I have accrued friends and family, like a global network of fireflies.

That's a great accomplishment. It's not without some envy that I hear about the travels of my more adventurous friends and question my own psychological constitution that leads me to settle. There's so much out there.

we lived in France in the interim between Russia and the US. Didn't I tell you the story of living with this crazy family where everyone was insane in their own way, with the mildest but the oddest insanity characterizing the husband, who was an avid fan of Romanesque architecture, and hated Gothic architecture so much that he literally refused to let us see the Rouen Cathedral during a road trip, instead taking a two-hour detour in a car, just so that we wouldn't even glimpse it from the distance? The rest of the family was much more belligerently insane, but their insanity expressed itself in much more conventional tropes of dysfunction.

I think later in the evening we are going to see "The Fall"--no big celebration, but my mother is here, so there's babysitting on tap :)

I miss you too!!! I really hope to see you in Europe soon.

Also which anthropologist--the other Russian woman I briefly met when we were at that diner place with soup? She is somewhere in Texas, no? Is she on lj? What's her screen handle?
