my friend and I came across this broom while exploring an abandoned school for mentally retarded children, and lo and behold, it was eager to take flight. Here is my friend taking her turn:

hey, you should really come to india for some urb-(and not so urb)exing of decay... one difference here is that things somehow manage to decay here without ever being finished. check it out - in the region where i am, i almost never see a house without these steel bars (what do you call it? armature?) sticking up on every single roof, in case they need to add more floors. no one really ever does it, but these crazy bars just became a part of the local landscape.
PS. awesome pic with the broom! looks like you're on your way to the local coven.

there is a beautiful abandoned place I have heard of in Chenai...is that anywhere near where you are? Believe me, I would LOVE to come to India, but it's just not in the cards this summer. However, maybe you could come visit me in my new Dutch splendor while you are in Russia.

I will email you--there is an entry about it on one of the urbex boards I am on, but I can't link it because only "full members" can see it, and you have to go through this whole voting/approval process to be a full member. Community structuring through esoteric knowledge and secrecy--Buddhists and urbexers alike :)

Rebar, I think.

An Egyptian guy once told me that you didn't have to pay property taxes there until your house was finished, and that's why all of Cairo is perpetually unfinished. I'm unconvinced, but it's a nice story.

brilliant! That's so...not quite Kafka, but I just woke up and can't think of the right allusion. Actually, that's so Soviet.

it is my favorite book in the world. Did we lj-talk about it before? I think I would make a good Gella...

Date: 2008-05-11 11:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alexgal.livejournal.com
No, we never specifically talked about it, but I remember a couple of years ago you had talked about it in glowing terms (and had maybe linked this ? (still have it bookmarked): http://www.idlewords.com/2005/11/dating_without_kundera.htm), that I went ahead and read it for the first time.

It's now in my all time favorites, so thank you for the implicit recommendation!

no problem! and ha, I remember that article, the Sexually Transmitted Book. I loved it so very much.

Which translation of M&M did you end up reading, do you remember?

The one by Diana Burgin and Katherin Tiernan O'Connor.
It seem to flow really nicely, but of course I don't know how it compares to the original.

You are a flyer! So fabulous.

Also, the colors in the room-pictures are beautiful. The blues and greens feel so... haunted, maybe? Like magical realism in image-form. Don't quite know how to say what I mean, but they're lovely.

Those photos are like stills from a Hayao Miyazaki film.

I wonder if you can put a hex on my thesis, so that its days (pages) are numbered...

Date: 2008-05-12 01:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lapsedmodernist.livejournal.com
that's quite a compliment thanks!

one hexx coming up...numbering pages is more important than you may think...when I was doing my comps I had this new computer that only had "textedit" or some other pre-installed minimalist program for writing, and the worst part of it was that it didn't split material up into pages, so no matter how long you scrolled, it was all one undifferentiated endless first page. It was very demoralizing.

as someone else put it: the walls are slowly absorbing our stuff. :) no really, but we're about knee deep in boxes instead of hip deep and that's progress. i'm starting to get waves of feeling like it's home. (like when i look from our bedroom, across the living room that's taking shape and see bits of the in progress kitchen as well)

what are you up to this thursday night?
