thoroughbass and I took young Fionn to the Fells...where we met two stregas...they were in their eighties, twins, dressed identically alike. They paid a lot of attention to Fionn. "Is he from The Island" one of them asked upon learning his name. "No," I said, "but his daddy is Irish."
and I really like this photo thoroughbass snapped of us
this is the expression (and the fingers positioning) Fionn has when he first sees something that piques his interest and prepares to investigate it.
oh how cool. I didn't spend much time in Scotland, but I loved both. I think me-in-my-twenties marginally preferred Edinburgh, I think me-at-almost-thirty would prefer Glasgow. Although me-in-my-twenties was majorly drunk the entire time I was in Glasgow, so who knows how accurate my memories are.
I would LOVE to come to london--I love love love London. theophile has an inexplicable case of Anglophilia, despite never having been there--but oh well, I can always go to London unchaperoned.
That first image is like something from a surreal dream. Two old colorfully-dressed women bearing a Most Important Message. I love it.
Your child is a joy to behold, he's so strikingly beautiful. I was out with a friend the other day who also has a beautiful son and I realized how difficult (but sometimes necessary!) it is to get angry with those sweet little faces. O mothering! What a complex challenge it is!
the ladies were a very surreal-dreamlike presence. They had raspy voices, and it was like a scene from a beginning of a bildunsgroman--witches taking an interest in a young child.
Fionn is not really yet at an age where I get angry with him, or where it's really possible to discipline him (although he understands the word "no")--he is sensitive to affect in language, but doesn't really understand much yet. I am dreading "the terrible twos!"
And hey, I have a question for you--since you just moved to Europe, and I am moving to Europe in August--did you ship any of your stuff? If you did, how expensive was it? I haven't made such a massive move in a long time--usually I just have a suitcase and a backpack.
Yeah I figured your son was still at the angelic age ( and boy is ahe angelic looking) but his beauty just brought that recent though to mind. Ha, the terrible twos. My friend is dealing with a son in the "threatening threes".
Alas, I cannot help you with shipping advice as (as aliceayers can tell you) my stuff is still lingering in Brooklyn until the end of the summer when I go back and pack it up. I mailed myself a few boxes of stuff but US Post is WAY expensive. If you come up with any hot tips on shipping companies on your end, I would be much obliged for the info. I definitely want to do it on the American side because it will be much cheaper in dollars.
thank you for the well-wishes...I will definitely let you know what I find out about shipping. From what I remember of various Russian acquaintances of my parents sending large amounts of stuff to Russia, there is some cheap fourth-or-fifth rate that goes by boat and takes a couple of months...or maybe they used some Russian service...research needs to be done and question to the diaspora will be posed!
right now I am idly browsing through various discount euro airlines and daydreaming about weekend trips.
The USPS got rid of that rate!!! I was so heartbroken at the post ofice. My mother ships stuff to Ghana quite often so she has the hook-up she just needs to pass the details along. I'll keep you posted.
Mm, much as I'd love to say yes!!!, it's something more subtle than that I think. The pictures themselves are often a bit more than just snapshots (even when that may be all they are), and your connecting them with other subjects in the same post is also interesting, among other things. It's cool. :)
ha! the old ladies are, indeed, very Nobokovian! That's what i thought too soon as I saw them. But prey tell, where/ what is this Fells and what are the stregas?
baby Fionn is getting so big!!! and, of course, i LOVE all the stipes happening here...
yes, looking at them I thought of the Vane sisters and acrostics and such...the Fells is in Medford/Winchester, large area, lots of hiking trails. Stregas are Italian old women witches.
There are always plenty of stripes where I am! And where Fionn is, at least for as long as I have jurisdiction over his fashion.
