heh. so this was way before you knew me, but in 2003, like a month into the war, I had this epiphany (outlined here: http://lapsedmodernist.livejournal.com/59611.html) that we live in the un-50s. I was so into that idea that I fully went through this phase where I dressed appropriately throughout 2003-2004. I had poodle skirts and cardigans, and I said things like swell. I thought that in doing that I was making this horror of a zeitgeist just a little more transparent.
yeah, I read your account of it...I tried putting Fionn on that lilypad thing, but he was not impressed. Crying ensued. For a baby born under water, he was sure scared of the lack of the solid ground.
I dunno, Serena seemed to do pretty well with it. At one point she and Rio were both rolling around in there happily. There was another baby there before us who seemed pretty delighted with it. Fionn was, however, terrified, and clung to me upon being retrieved.
he was, in fact, born under water. maybe that's why he always sleeps like a little frog. I mentioned it in the birth announcement, and I never wrote about the birth in detail. you, too, can have a baby born under water if you opt for a natural birth without an epidural, etc. I think water births are gaining in popularity, although my particular method of delivery shocked a couple of my traditionally-inclined friends, and totally stumped this moron doctor when we had to take Fionn to the hospital, who was, like, "really? a water birth? what's that?" Like, how do you work at the Children's Hospital and not know what a water birth is? Did you go to a Clown Medical School?
