Jan. 22nd, 2003 11:14 pmi was gonna write this whole thing this morning about this "AOL news" piece that pissed me off, it was all about Roe vs Wade, and was very unsubtly catering to the pro-lifers, saying things like "Exhausted Ms Whatever drove 13 hours to DC to have her say about the fact that unborn children must be protected" and using various rhetoric devices to valorize/humanize the pro-lifers, and giving minimum chilly coverage to the pro-choice activities like the NARAL dinner, etc. i was gonna post the whole article but then the computer crashed, which is probably for the best because doing in-depth textual analysis would have just really pissed me off.
the latest Economist had an interesting analysis of the whole abortion contraversy, and how Europe avoided it by medicalizing the issue and making the discourse about it technological, where in American it was doomed to become political because it was made into this moral/constitutional issue of binaries and absolutes.
anyway...i took this virgin/whore quiz, and apparently i am a catholic boy's dream (but i already knew that!)

50-50, baby! Ah, you are fairly normal. You have sex, though to you it's not more exciting than a new designer outfit.
Secretly, you are a adventurous soul just waiting for someone to take control. Open up a little, and you'll show your guy the best sex ever.
There's nothing to be afraid of - except fainting from multiple orgasms!
You are great at kissing, getting yourself off, and using your hands.

wait a minute...
Date: 2003-01-23 02:12 pm (UTC)i'm snowed in at the moment and avoiding work so i went to take the test.
You Are 75% Whore!
75% Whore. Now we're getting somewhere. You're certainly no virgin, but haven't quite reached whore status.
You have the potential to be whore-like but stop yourself short when it comes to foursomes and riding dick with the passion of a wild cowgirl.
Next time your lover asks to include your best friend, go for it. In fact, invite a couple of friends over tonight and experience the sensation of uninhibited orgies.
You are great at sex positions, making your lover orgasm, and having sex in new places.

First, I wonder if Europe actually has avoided the abortion "issue." I should wonder if a lack of obvious political activism really means that there's a lack of dissent. I also wonder if it is a quote-unquote issue in Europe, which would change the context of the statement altogether.
Second, I wonder what countries in particular have effectively "avoided" the issue. I want to point out that medicalizing abortion is in itself not a way of evading the issue - in the U.S., to frame abortion medical terms is only another way of politicizing abortion.(*) Perhaps in some Continental European countries, where, to call upon a bad stereotype, "culture" is generally conservative and "politics" usually liberal,(!) outcries may have been quelled by painting abortion with a thick layer of medical-government control. On the other hand, it may never have been an issue because of the stereotypical separation that I've described. The validity of that criticism relies on what countries are included in the magazine's statement.
So, I wonder what forms the abortion trope (and I do mean, "trope") takes in countries with state-run healthcare, or socialist leanings.
At any rate, abortion in the U.S. is thoroughly medicalized, and that hasn't changed a thing. Even the Christian who pickets the clinic out of an entirely moral drive seeks to change the law, and abortion law is, in turn, written in a medical, not moral context.
(*): I refer you to my stupid post, more crap about abortion.
(!): As opposed to the American stereotype of liberal culture and conservative politics.

Date: 2003-01-31 03:40 pm (UTC)It's interesting to think about how increasing a practice's bureaucratic content might divert subjective culpability. At any rate, I guess I'm still missing something.
