I am so confused by the latest Fred Phelps missive, can someone please explain?

He and his wacky sidekicks are planning to protest the Virginia Tech shootings funerals, and his website says:

"WBC will preach at the funerals of the Virginia Tech students killed on campus during a shooting rampage April 16, 2007. You describe this as monumental horror, but you know nothing of horror -- yet. Your bloody tyrant Bush says he is 'horrified' by it all. You know nothing of horror -- yet. Your true horror is coming. 'They shall also gird themselves with sackloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads' (Eze. 7:18).
Why did this happen, you ask? It's simple. Your military chose to shoot at the servants of God today, and all they got for their effort was terror. Then, the LORD your God sent a crazed madman to shoot at your children. Was God asleep while this took place? Was He on vacation? Of course not. He willed this to happen to punish you for assailing His servants."

I am confused, I always thought they were showing up to soldiers' funerals because of a general "America = Sodom" sentiment, now who are these servants of god that the military shot at? Is this Iraqis? I mean, I know once upon a time he was down with Saddam, and even sent a delegation to Iraq, with Saddam's permission to stand in the streets of Baghdad with signs condemning the Clintons and anal sex, but then he said Saddam was in hell with Gerald Ford, so I figured that particular bromance was over. What the hell is he talking about?

But, you see, I, professionally in love with Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande, epistemologically enlightened by Ron Suskind's "Without a Doubt" and "Left Behind," still can't grasp the emic interiority of Fred Phelps. Does he lack emic-ness (emicity)?

If I were to apply the political compass to Phelps and Bin Laden, I suspect they would end up near each other. Particularly on the social axis. I'm surprised more evangelicals haven't put aside their doctrinal differences to embrace their spiritual brothers. Aryan Nations was able to put aside their hatred of people more brown than them, to ally with "islamic jihadists" against jews. So if racist neo-nazi Christians can do it, why not apocalyptic Christians too?
