wow, I really like this set of photos! Where was this? Is it really a whole town that's abandoned?

Date: 2006-09-25 12:03 pm (UTC)

It really is...there are still a few people living there, illegally, but 90% of the houses have been abandoned. There are also remnants of an amusement park (pics to come).

Hey, where are you now? Back on the West Coast?

man, I wanna go there.

I am indeed back on the west coast, in Seattle.

Hey! I loved them, but I must say, my favourite of them all is definately ghost mirror. I love the contrast of the light and dark.
Super.

This set really conveys loneliness. And it still has your signature Fantasyland style.

Loooove 'picnic' and 'inside out'.

heh, I am so happy with how "Picnic" turned out. Seeing those chairs just wowed me, but I was not sure I would be able to convey it at all in the pic. I am excited to see yours!

This is fascinating to me. Why has the town been abandoned and why is it illegal to live there?

Have you heard of (or been to) Centralia, Pennsylvania, which was abandoned in 1981 because of an underground mine fire which started in 1962 and still burns under the town? Apparently, smoke is perpetually emitted from an abandoned portion of road.

I have heard of Centralia. I don't want to say on here where this place is, but I am going to post a link that explains what's the what and then delete it, so you will get it in an email.

Centralia no longer exists.

Apparently, there are still a handful of people living there, but I haven't been myself so I couldn't say for sure. I do understand most of the town was razed.

hey, I actually tried calling you Friday night to see if you wanted to come but...I think I got distracted and didn't leave a message...you probably got a missed call from me, tho.

I will happily tell you where it is, be warned, tho, that it is about a 3-hour car trip to get there.

where did you hear they were living there illegally?

i thought the residents on the middle 4 houses just came back for the summer to their beach houses, took off the boards, cleaned up the mess, and lived like normal since the island still has water and power?

i went there 4th of july weekend and the place was rather hpppin'. well, probably as hopping as that place can get relatively speaking.

it's still the same weird legal situation, with the houses privately owned and the lands on-lease homestead style, and the city ended the leases. I think it's analogous to a situation where if you squat somewhere long enough, it is very hard to evict you, even if squatting is illegal, because tenant protection laws are so complicated and often in conflict with property rights laws. The houses are still their, but they are, essentially, squatting on land. There were houses there that were obviously still in use, but most were closed down, and not in a "for the winter" way.

Didn't I?

I thought I had...

I am happy to do what I can to diagnose and repair, especially if the issues are more software than hardware...

Once we've figured out what's gone bad, you can decide whether you want to buy any needed hardware pieces.

I live in Chelsea, and work in Burlington, and am found in Davis Square most Tuesday evenings. Other evenings are less predictable, and thus more possible to meet you in your own natural environs... as I would need to have my hands on the beastie to figure out whatever I can.

The dresser in that one picture looks almost new. Did it look that nice in person?

Absolutely fucking gorgeous shots.

I know you don't give out information publicly, but I was wondering if there was some way I could privately contact you (email?) so I can learn more about this place... it has me obsessed.
