I thought this was a joke. All the way through the story. I thought this was New Yorker doing, like, covert Shouts and Murmurs. Oh, I get it, I thought--the Saramago and the melatonin are, like, to name-check a yuppie/gay/metrosexual lifestyle.

It's not a joke, apparently.

Question: if I thought this was a joke, for a really long time, does that make me an optimist?

Yet another reason (despite consistent inability to make a smooth flight) that I avoid AA at all costs.

I totally thought it was satire, and wouldn't have known otherwise unless you'd said so. Perhaps I've been living in large coastal cities for too long?

gack.

I'd have hoped it were a satire column, were it not that you've already declared that not to be.

I wish there were a way to bring evolution to bear on this sort a little faster...
