I bought one of those super-high-tech scales that says it measures your body fat percentage. Apparently it does so by sending some bioelectrical currents through your body? Which kind of freaked me out upon reading it in the manual. Is this really harmless? Or is this one of those things that will not withstand the test of time, like ephedra and Duck & Cover?

The measurement methodology is pretty harmless, the bigger question is whether the number is gets is (a) representative of your whole body and (b) useful. I can see opinions changing about the latter, but it's better data points than just a weight scale.

If you put your finger on the ends of a battery it's passing current through your body. It's harmless. Accuracy is another question.

I have one like that, but it's not very accurate compared to the machine at the gym. Which is stange, since the machine at the gym uses the same electric current method, only on hands instead of feet. Probably just higher quality. Also, I see no reason to measure one's body fat more than once a month -- it can't possibly change that much. And if that current poses any health risks, those would probably kick in with frequent(er) use.

used mine for years with no real problems except extreme disppointment at seeing the numbers go up and down, and occasiona fixations thereof.

The numbers are not too accurate, just sort of a general idea, but you can do some fun experiments like try before and after:

1)a meal
2)a nap
3)the bathroom
4)a shower

etc.

My lowest tanita bodyfat was 12 percent, back in the day.
