When I first learned about the orly thing, I got really paranoid because I remembered incidents where people had said "orly?" to me and I couldn't remember the context, and it was like "ahhhH! they were making fun of me and i didn't even know it!"
it's a surprisingly resilient internet fad/meme from 4chan (everyone's favorite source for dickgirl tentacle rape; be warned that very little of that site is worksafe, and, if you go there, you'll find the retarded memes mostly on /b/). here's a Wikipedia page about the catchphrase and the owl. basically, it's an easy and obnoxious way of dismissing someone's comments on the internet, and snow owls look really funny.

wow, it really is just a random-ass owl. here I always thought this had to be one of those things I found really funny but was actually way more complicated than I thought and hence not funny anymore.
