dear livejournal genie

what time is it?

I am at [livejournal.com profile] alice_ayers' apartment and I cannot locate a device that will tell me the correct time. There are many time-meters, but they say:

computer: 7:28 PM
desk clock: 12:00
alarm clock: 11:32 AM
my cell phone: 12:25 PM
kitchen clock 11:49 AM

what time is it PLEASE????

thank you

Right now, at 3:39 p.m. EST, it's 3:39 p.m. EST. Don't know how long that will last though.

That is, if you trust this government to handle your time.

if your computer has a reliable network connection, you could use Network Time Protocol (NTP) to keep it (your computer) synchronized using one of the many NTP servers that exist on the internet. this could keep your computer accurate to within less than a second. you'll need to find out whether someone has written an NTP client for your computer (apple?), and then find the IP address of one or more of the many NTP servers. the catch is that you need to know the current time. the synchronization only works if your computer's time is within five minutes of the actual time.

P.S., if you don't care whether your computer is synchronized, here's the current Massachusetts time:

If it's a Mac (Mac OS 8 or later, including all versions of Mac OS X), the Date & Time control panel or preference pane includes NTP client features -- and the Mac doesn't care about the difference between itself and the target NTP server. If you choose to sync, it will sync -- right up to the diff between now and epoch.

Apple has included three predefined NTP server targets in the widget, but you can target any you like. I usually go with time.nist.gov, which auto-switches between several NIST servers, which are all atomic-click synced.

There are several Windows freebies out there, too, which can be set to sync your PC's clock regardless of the diff it finds. Likewise for the *nixes.

That's just beautiful.

I don't know where [livejournal.com profile] alice_ayers lives, but I'm guessing the west coast -- as that would put the computer on GMT, and your cell phone on the local tower sync (as most modern cell phones do)...

The other three... are a mystery! Be on the lookout for a Great Dane with 4 meddling kids, in a funky van!

unrelatedly to time, this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/anyalev/116575.html) had me laughing so hard i started crying - i was just discussing "sinuyu lampu" with parents. and gorchichniki. god how i hated those... anyway, it seems appropriate now, as i am sitting here s sinusami zashedshimi za kosinusi.

as for time, i thought cell phones always showed correct time? at least i have yet to prove this theory wrong in several years of cell-phone usage... xept when there's no reception. then they just shut down.

not apropos to 'time'.
