A day out with my Holga ([livejournal.com profile] annabelle: this is what prints from the color120 film look like, I have a couple more rolls of it to play with!)

a couple of these are from the same shoot as the time-zero polaroids I posted a couple of weeks ago.

Ahem, long time reader, first time commenter - greetings and salutations. Further to the King Kong Blackface debacle (I thought you might miss it if I posted on the end of that lengthy thread from last year: I'm a New Zealander and this being a small country, several of my friends and acquaintances played 'natives' in that film. Including indigenous New Zealanders (Maori) who had to go under sunlamps for weeks, and then black the hell up, and also a few Somali and Sudanese refugees. Also in even-blacker-face. Playing the Polynesian/African savages they ...actually... are? None of us knew what to say. And then there was the local white-boy liberal boosterism and apologia that surrounds the Peter Jackson racist-myth-remake industry here (more big muscly Maori boys in even-blacker-face as savage Orcs in LOTR etc), which tricked me before I saw the movie into thinking that while the Kong story is racist at conception, that Jackson had pulled off something clever. Or something. Uh - no. Some influential people here said that the Skull islanders were just so 'alien' that they were less offensive than if Jackson had made them real Polynesians. Except they were, like, specifically African. They were krumping for fuck's sake. Why couldn't they have been white people? Why couldn't the Elves have been... I dunno, black people in whiteface? Something? Anything? The Joe vs. the Volcano ethnological parody seems sophisticated by comparison. Maybe I was just a lot younger - what was it? West-Polynesian-Jewish-Celts colonised by Pepsi; coming out in kilts and singing Hava Nagila, adorned in crushed soft-drink cans? Sorry for the random rave out of the blue, but I thought you might sympathise. Happy New Year!

oh man. i'm definitely pony-ing up the $15 whole dollars and getting me one of those cameras. i'm thinking about the last weekend of january for our photos as this one is full for me and next weekend i'm in chicago so what are you up to the weekend after that? i think i might want to go to the fetish flea on saturday but sunday should be free. if this works we should run with it and i'll let aphonia know.

yes!! that totally works for me. What is fetish flea? Sounds interesting! do you know where in Chicago you will be staying?

I imagine Ferranti-Degi would have Holgas. I don't know how much they are there; at B&H they are $20 without the flash (which is the one I have, and as I was telling you before, I sort of don't see the point of using it with the flash).

So yes, last weekend in January, it's a plan. I look forward to meeting [livejournal.com profile] aphonia.

so, tentatively that sunday but i have to check on a thing or two to confirm that. if not sunday, saturday.

here's more information about the flea:

http://www.nelaonline.org/fff.html

it's basically a place where a lot of vendors of fetishy things (i.e. erotic art, corsets, fun things to hit people with, candles, sexy clothes, leather stuff, adult toys) get together. there are also some classes and discussions on various topics.

let's definitely plan for that Sunday...I may ask to tag along to the fetish bazaar? will I see you before you go to Chicago?

okay, we'll plan for that sunday. i'll send out an official type email and we can sort out where to meet and when and stuff. i'm sure you'd be more than welcome to tag along to the fetish bazaar. i'll find out more details re: time. considering that you're in nyc for the beginning of this week i don't think i'll catch up with you 'til after i get back from chicago but we'll have good stories to share by then. :)

I can see why you are going to miss that camera film. I think you have such a great eye. You know -- if you ever feel like changing professions (say in about two years or so) move to Louisville, KY and let me train you to work for me.

actually, these were taken with my Holga, with regular 120 film, which is not going out of production any time soon. The ones from before were with SX-70 film, which is being discontinued...That one is my long-time favorite, but I still have plenty of weird films/cameras to experiment with.

Believe me, your idea sounds very tempting. Except for the Midwest part. Although I have only heard good things about Louisville, how it's a progressive oasis and how good the music/arts scene is.

I especially like the self portrait.

though the starry tree caught me when I first saw it, it looks oddly *different* now, and I cannot say how or why...
