Dear livejournal genie,

how do I do that thing where when I digitize or upload my photographs I can have a transparency of my name on it?

thankyou

i dont know but its called watermarking, so that would be a good term to search for in whatever program you use.

(hello, i added your journal because i like the news and pictures, no need to add me back)

right, but how? what's the command?

not really a command -- the watermark filter in photoshop is for digital copyright stuff, not to make a graphic.

make a new layer, set the transparency to multiply (to start, you can try others later), put the type on that layer, adjust opacity of the layer to your tastes, and flatten.

i'm not really sure what you're looking for exactly. if you could point me to an image of what you want, i could be more specific.

thanks! would you believe I don't really know how to do layers? I think it's time to sit down with some photoshop tutorials...

it's best to use a vector-based watermark if your photos vary wildly in size--you can also look into digital tracking if theft is a problem--we use Digimark.

if you have to watermark a bunch of photos it's worth writing a "droplet" (automated action sequence) in photoshop.

awesome, thank you

that link is very helpful

is there an easy way to make a droplet?

this should help with making an automated action sequence. i bookmarked it some months ago. all hail photoshop!

yeah, there is only one way but it is easy--basically, you are telling the program to "record" each action as you perform it, and the next time it just runs the same sequence of actions (example: open image, insert watermark layer, adjust opacity to 20%, flatten, save, close image).

i never could figure that out. that's why i just add my name to the border or somewhere on the photo with the text tool.

also, how do you make the borders? That's something else I haven't figured out how to do in Photoshop.

create new empty layer-->select all-->under "edit" select "stroke"-->choose "inside" and number of pixels (ex. 10), hit "ok", and it will "stroke" a filling of however wide you have asked it to.

i do borders a slightly different way in photoshop. i do Image, Resize, Canvas Size, then you can select the width and stuff.

Example:

I normally do mine with .2 all the way around (with the "relative" box checked) in black, then choose another colour, go back into the menu and do .01 around that.

of course, i know nothing of layers or any of that stuff, so perhaps the other way is easier or works more efficiently, i don't know! a photoshop wizard i most definitely AM NOT! :)

i look forward to more of your photos!
