this happened to a large aquarium in nyc two summers ago when they had the big power outage. except then there were no flood waters and so the caretakers were able to operate pumps manually until the power came back on. aquariums need to think about back-up generators -- they apparently haven't been planning for the occasional long power outage.

o... humans have the responsibility to take care of these animals; we have domesticated them, they rely on us.
it makes me want to adopt all the animals. of course, then my apartment would smell really funny, & there would be no room for me!

I mostly have been keeping away from visuals of the wreckage of Katrina.

The heart breaks again.

I don't know if the news coverage was the same on your end, but a few days back all the Canadian networks were focusing on the animals like *crazy*. Mostly, I think, to show how irrational the NOLA residents were who wouldn't leave their companion animals.

I'm going to pretend that there are definitely air holes in the top of that...

That top dog was adorable until I realized that certainly isn't just water he's soaked in. How awful.

I'm sure the cats can breathe...it looks like that guy is rescuing them...

Yeah, I would hope he knows how to successfully rescue them. Just weird because you can't actually *see* the airholes.

this week, PBS's "Nature" is showing the people who went into New Orleans to rescue pets in the early weeks after Katrina. Check your local listings for a broadcast time.
