Sep. 7th, 2005 09:23 amBack in the day I kinda dismissed this piece on account of thinking the source needed to dial down on the tinfoil. I assumed there was a fair amount of conjecture in the reporting.
However, after reading this troubling first-person narrative (with lots of photographs) of an attempt to deliver goods to a FEMA camp deep in the woods, I am starting to reconsider. Make sure you read all the way.

Date: 2005-09-07 02:49 pm (UTC)Falls Creek Prepares to Welcome Disaster Survivors on Monday (9/4/05)
Oklahoma City, OK -- September 4, 2005 – Executive leadership from the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma met with government officials on Sunday to coordinate the logistics for welcoming an estimated 3,000 hurricane disaster survivors to the campus of Falls Creek Baptist Conference Center near Davis, Oklahoma. Survivors of Hurricane Katrina are expected to arrive at Falls Creek throughout the day on Monday. . .
Major Grimes, with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, informed those attending that troopers had established a command center on the campus and are providing security and law enforcement for the facility. The American Red Cross indicated they will be responsible for mass care, registration and food distribution. . .

Beginning Monday, September 5, Falls Creek Baptist Conference Center will be host to over 3,000 evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. (9/5/05)
Dr. Anthony L. Jordan, executive director – treasurer of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma is calling on all Oklahoma Southern Baptist Churches to organize volunteers immediately who can assist with a variety of needs at Falls Creek during this very unique time of ministry for the next few months . . .
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE FOOD, GIFTS or CLOTHES TO FALLS CREEK!
The BGCO is working with the Governor’s Office to determine the exact needs for the operation. We will provide you a list of needs as soon as it is available. The important thing for now is to assemble a list of willing volunteers to help minister to evacuees at Falls Creek for the coming months.

Those two announcements are pretty straightforward, and indicated participation of the American Red Cross in the operations of the camp, which is reassuring. Yesterday's announcement, though, is odd--and somewhat ominous in light of the account that you posted:
Falls Creek Operation Put on Standby Status (9/6/05)
Oklahoma City, OK -- September 6, 2005 – After anticipating the arrival of 3,000 survivors from Hurricane Katrina for more than two days, volunteers and government agencies were given the word late Tuesday that the status of operations at Falls Creek was put on standby.
Major Mike Grime, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, announced to nearly 400 volunteers and state personnel that the decision had been made by the Governor and other state officials to scale back operations at Falls Creek. “The good news is that it appears those who needed our help have been taken care of for now,” Grimes explained. “We will scale back to a skeleton crew for now, but none of our facilities will be compromised. There will be troopers present 24 hours a day at Falls Creek as we evaluate the need on a 12, 24, 36 and 48 hour basis. ..
Following Major Grimes comments Anthony L. Jordan, executive director-treasurer of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma assured the crowd that their hard work had not been in vain. “We are and continue to be prepared in the event that we are needed. It is very possible that you may be needed within the next 48 hours. We will notify you immediately should we need your assistance in welcoming our Oklahoma guests to our great state,” said Jordan. . .

I'm still somewhat skeptical about the idea of FEMA detention camps (I read that same piece several years ago and had the same reaction as you did), but would like to hear more about what exactly is going on there.
