Thank you, Sandra Day O'Connor, for my birthday gift.

I swear, if the apocalypse ever does commence, full-force, it will be on my birthday.

I don't fucking care if you had to legislate from a coffin hooked up to an IV, but since you were one of the five bitches (and I use that as a gender-neutral term, which covers Scalia, Rehnquist, Kennedy and Thomas as well) that enabled the Bush Coup, I fully expected you to keep your ass seated on that bench until 2008 at least (assuming the Diebold Democracy would elect someone marginally less neo-fundie for the next term, in PR interests) in case I want to, you know, have an abortion, or something, in the next four years.

That was, by the way, a (despairing and embittered) prognostication, not an exhortation. I'm hoping for quite the opposite, of course, particularly as it concerns your birthday. May it be a happy one, despite the news.

I know, right?

Apparently not.

Thank you for the birthday wishes. It was very low-key, which is just how I like'em.

I think she might have been of that mindset - holding out till Bush left, but her husband's been quickly falling into the ravages of alzheimer's, and she finally realized she just couldn't hold out for an additional three plus years.

and

2. See you in a few hours! Thank you and [livejournal.com profile] lengel for your consultation, I procured Mr. Jack and like a genie in a bottle he is just waiting to be let out. He is sending mixed messages, though. His body is saying "let's go" but his heart is saying NO.

Yeah, I know. I woke up to that shit.
Literally, two o'clock in the afternoon, I open my eyes, rub out the sand, and pulled my laptop into bed. I open it up, hit reload, and hope for some kind of invigorating e-mail to start the day. No, not quite, I see Sandra Day O'Connor's sad, sad face, and all I could say was, "What's your excuse bitch?" What a shabby bag. What could possibly be her excuse for not outlasting that sickly, shambling hulk Rehnquist?

Hap-hap-happy birthday anyway.

Happy birthday.

If you want something else to get your mind off the court thingy, please translate [livejournal.com profile] _octopus_ for me. I am trying to understand. Are octopi vaginal or phallic? What is the appeal?

Date: 2005-07-01 09:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lapsedmodernist.livejournal.com
wait...what? that community isn't about sex, it's just about...general appreciation of the octopuses...octipi? It's gendered as male in Russian, if you were curious. why did you think it was about sex? DID you think it was about sex?

*confused now*

From: [identity profile] apropos.livejournal.com
No, just there were a lot of sort of arty-erotic photos of beautiful women & men draped with octopi. I was trying to figure out if it was a tentacle fetish community or what.

> assuming the Diebold Democracy would elect someone marginally less neo-fundie

is it just me, or has there been an increase in the mood for impeachment? i've been seeing more mentions of it in the past few weeks. of course, this would require at least a change in the control of the house of reps. zogby announced poll results recently that showed that 70% of repub voters wouldn't support impeachment even if they were convinced shrub has been lying about the lead up to the assault of iraq (and convincing them is that he lied is nearly impossible). 70%. more proof that this is a political party that has no principles -- anything is acceptable as long as it means they hold power.

can the house of reps. change parties in 2006? so far, nothing has changed to prevent elections from being stolen between 11 PM and 1 AM on election night by a few (white) guys with PCs, if they see results that aren't to their liking. but given the gerrymandering that has taken place over the past ten years (since newtco in 1994), this shouldn't be necessary for them to do. the house elections are pre-stolen.

Date: 2005-07-01 08:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] orpheusinhades.livejournal.com
Yeah, the House is so gerrymandered I don't expect a non-Republican House for the next 30 years or so.

The worst thing about the O'Connor thing is that she's one of the swing voters on the court, a so-called "moderate". I think it's unlikely she'll be replaced with anyone to the left of Scalia. And Rehnquist will probably also be replaced with some young Nazi youth wannabe. No two ways about it - this is very bad.

From: [identity profile] mjmj.livejournal.com
you need to think positive. for example, scalia could be out duck hunting with dick, and he could have a stroke, and while he's falling down his gun could go off and dick would be a hunting accident. meanwhile, scalia's stroke could put him in a persistent vegetative state. it could happen.

I read the news at a computer terminal in the library of the university in Sewanee, Tennessee.

Eventually, a voice from the carrel to my right: "Honey, you don't look so good."

I glanced over and saw a black man, not some crazy white southern redneck. I said, "O'Connor is leaving the Court."

Pause.

"I don't feel so good," said my neighbor.

Happy Birthday!

Oh and if it makes you feel any better my birthday is November 2nd.
The bad news: Last year my birthday was the Kerry-Bush election. Talk about a party! We got together and watched the election results and went to bed early and depressed.

Yeah, that would be a bad birthday to have. I knew someone whose birthday was 9/11, that is going to be rough for him for a long while.
