[livejournal.com profile] apropos just alerted me via AIM to a new addition to the I Am Not Anthropology But I Play One On TV genre: Naked Josh!

SYNOPSIS:

Professor Josh Gould grades himself on his relationship savvy and his ability to practice what he teaches in the second season of Naked Josh. A professor of sexual anthropology, Josh teaches sexual behaviour theory to his students—but his extensive education on the subject fails to inform his own sex life. Will the young, brilliant Oxford graduate finally come of age this season?

Last year, Josh Gould returned to Montreal a hero. With a PhD in hand, he became the youngest anthropology professor ever to be hired by his university. An enthusiastic teacher, Josh’s personal life becomes a (sometimes unwitting) source of insight as, in each episode, he plunges into the intriguing world of Montreal’s dating scene to experience first-hand the courtship ritual and social mores he teaches in class.

Josh’s lovable sexual guides are back and in fine form for season two: his best friend Eric, a bartender in a funky bar on the Main whose idea of a committed relationship is letting the girl stay overnight; Jenn, the lesbian bar manager looking for love in all the wrong places; the ambitious Natalie Bouchard, Josh’s student and research assistant; and Samantha, the free-spirited artist who might just be “The One.” New this year is Audrey Habedian, a rival professor who challenges Josh’s reputation and job.

Oh yeah, I've seen ads for this one in the Toronto subway. It looks quite bad even by the standards of Canadian commercial tv, which are not high.

But that's not what I wanted to say. What I wanted to say was, did you ever see The Sentinal? I haven't, actually, but I've read quite a lot of the fanfic. And yeah, we got your curly-haired sexually-active boy-genius anthropology-grad-student-inexplicably-teaching-his-own-classes right here. Plus also, he fights crime, at the side of his best friend cum research subject, who has superpowers. Who he lives with. It's a Batman/Robin thing, which is why the fanfic. Hee!

Anthropology: the academic discipline most likely to be traduced on television.

Is it available in the states????

The Sentinal, I mean. All we have is Relic Hunter with Tia Carrere.

The Sentinal was one more proud product of that place we call Hollywood, in fact. But it was cancelled in, um, I think 2000. Or 1999? It ended when the anthro students called a press conference to announce (untruthfully) that all his research was faked, in order to better protect the Sekrit Identity of Bruce Wayne his pal the Sentinal. And then he cut his hair and went off to the police academy instead. Or so I gather from perusing the fan fiction.

I've never even heard of Relic Hunter, but with Tia Carrere? It's got to be high-quality! You know, the world needs a website keeping track of TV Anthropology ...

And I am so disappointed, yet relieved, by the paucity of historians on TV.

Wait! What about Da Vinci's Inquest? (Or does that not count as 'commercial?')

That's yet another show I've never seen, not that this would ever stop me from opining about it. But isn't it a CBC production? CBC = not commercial, I figure.

Da Vinci's Inquest is great... especially for Vancouver viewers, like me, who are not used to seeing their city playing itself. The fact that the main character is based on the current mayor (in a previous career incarnation) makes it even more surreal/real.

Heh. I thought I was the one who made "exoticizing" into a verb.
Shoulda known better.

No, actually that's a "theory" verb. Meaning I should have a macro for it on my laptop given how much I use it in any professional paper I write.

i think they're exoticizing montreal as well as anthropology.

i forgot that canadian tv still sucked. i would say that degrassi didn't suck, but some of my older friends think otherwise. (one of these older friends lived in San Fran and people heard her canadian ontario accent and said "you talk like yr on degrassi"!). i didn't know that californians were even aware of the existence of this show.

Hm. For someone who has no background in these fields, I always seem to use vocabulary connected to theories in social science and anthropology...
What do you know about the term "desynthetized."
Does it mean anything in your "theory" ?

a bartender in a funky bar

I'd be hard-pressed to come up with six words in conjunction that sound more awkward than that fragment.

Pity Canadian television: it strives so hard to be metropolitan, but...

Whither KITH?

You be quiet. Glenn Gould is my imaginary boyfriend. That is, if he were still alive and I were homosexual.

*tips hat*

I would like this if he were 14 like Doogie Howser but I have a feeling with the sex stuff that's not the case.
