But I am not allowed to write about it at the moment because I just confused a real army recruiting video with a parody of army recruiting videos.

So, how about a poll instead:

As my favorite ever Smiths song* goes, "don't forget the songs that made you cry / and the songs that saved your life"

So, what songs saved your life?

* okay, it's tied with "Ask"

No song has saved my life, but "Old Main Drag" by the Pogues sums up how I feel most of the time.

Uhh... Des Moines is in IOWA (IA), not Idaho (ID). That completely ruined the joke for me, even though "Apocalypse Now" is my favorite movie of all time.

As a current resident of Iowa... No, I'm not, but I'll try. ^_^

I still don't get it. :(

What's up, didn't like the picture or the caption? Remember, the line may be from Apocalype Now, but it was straight CAV talk from LTC Kilgore (a.k.a Robert Duvall). Besides, it wasn't the best part of the quote, "The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory."

Take a chill pill. Thank the soldier for your right to free speech, he will go to the grave to defend it, even this old soldier :-)

Free speech means I get to say what I like and don't like, no? It would seem that your comment contradicts your very sentiment. If I should make the most of my right of free speech, why should I take a chill pill or thank anyone? Or is free speech conditional?

Also I don't believe that the US army protects my right to free speech. So, I don't think we are going to agree on this one.

Awesome!

For a second it gave me ironiagnosia, but only because I referenced "Heart of Darkness" before remembering "Apocalypse Now," which, to be fair to me, I saw once and that was during a psychedelic experience. What can you do, poor decision-making skills and all that.

Haha, thats about as good an idea as watching Fire Walk With Me whilst tripping, which I have sadly done, though not quite intentionally. It was also two of my friends first time tripping, AND their first exposure to twin peaks and david lynch. Ouch!

"No one's little girl," the Raincoats. Well, I don't know about saved my life exactly. But it provided the soundtrack for some good decision-making.

Aiyo, whattabout "Hateful" and "Rudie Can't Fail" by the Clash? I dunno about lives, but those two songs have saved a couple of parties before.

Yes, I am still putting this one into effect -- from Boston: Ohio, Japan, Boulder, New Orleans, Rwanda, Egypt, DR Congo. Am I out of range yet? My ma she's only called me once since I've been here, I think it's working.

"La Cienega Just Smiled" by Ryan Adams

And I hold you close
in the back of my mind
And raise my glass
'cause either way I'm dead
Neither of you really help me
to sleep anymore
One breaks my body
and the other breaks my soul

I wouldn't have been born!

Without the song "Homeward Bound," by Simon and Garfunkel my mom would never have moved back to Arizona from Berkley and met my dad. The song touches me as well, especially now that my mom is gone:

I'm sitting in the railway station.
Got a ticket to my destination.
On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand.
And ev'ry stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band.
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.
Ev'ry day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines.
And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories
And ev'ry stranger's face I see reminds me that I long to be,
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

Tonight I'll sing my songs again,
I'll play the game and pretend.
But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me.
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.
Silently for me.

That's funny because U2 Acrobat saved my life too.
The Hunter by Bjork pretty closely as well.
The Shins have been saving my life lately.

The The, "This Is The Day," for obvious reasons.

It's mostly been albums for me, though -- Thomas Dolby's 2 earliest figure heavily in there, as does Prince's "Lovesexy" and "Sign 'O' The Times."

I don't think any songs have saved my life, but the song "'D' for Democracy" by Spirit of the West quite literally saved my cat's life. I shan't recollect the events here, as they are more effectively chronicled in my dopey essay "How Spirit of the West saved my cat," and that's far too long (and dopey) for me to post here.

The First McCartney solo album, "McCartney," was the only thing I spoke to for a month when I was at my worst about a year and a half ago.

I can't think of anything else that saved my life exactly, but there are records I play when I'm freaking out. Surfer girl. Old instrumental Bacharach. Doo Wop records.

Speaking of doo wop, I'm going to go get a milkshake.

yours,
jesse
