i think i caught grad student guilt from one of the other students. claire was saying recently that she thinks the permanent modus operandi of any graduate student is guilt, about work, in a weird secularization of the catholic method for academia (but really, what is the foucauldian panopticum is not a mutation of the Spanish Inquisition)? anyway, the last two days i've been freaking out about doing work. had all sorts of unpleasant dreams last night, talk about unmanaged anxiety.
plus there are all these insane errands to run. am engaged in kafkaesque battle with the cable company because they never came to pick up the cable box from my old apartment. finally, i go back to the apartment (an hour each way, mind you). cable box not there. i smoke a cigarette hoping it will materialize. cable box still not there. i can't ask my ex-landlord about it because he has gone to trinidad for oh, three weeks. fuck.
did some more transcriptions of interviews with sufferers of bipolar disorder and anxiety which did not help my general disposision.
also have been obsessing about wittgenstein's remarks on colors, which has to do with his cognition of categories, but basically he starts out by imagining different colors as transparent--blue, green, etc., then draws attention to the fact that white cannot be transparent, so it has something to do with the categorical nature of color white.
went to an interesting media/technoculture digital presentation for class called "race and digital space"--it had all sorts of film shorts by and about minorities. the coolest one was an excerpt from an indie (like, super indie, $10 budget but made it to some sundance workshop) sci-fi film set in 2020 when mexicans are trying to get illegal jobs in america by hacking into the cybermarket by installing portals in their arms (think eXistanZ). the woman who does it is called coyotech, like a modification of coyote, aka guide to illegal immigrants to cross the border; she talks about how she considers all illegal immigrants of the past hackers, because to her hacking is understanding a foreign, self-contained system and breaking into it. it's all done to this minimalist techno music, it's great.
i should try to do some work. i just can't keep my mind straight, there are things that are distracting me.
