Best Overheard in New York entry ever:

The subway doors open. A hobo enters, holding a bottle of windex in
one hand and a tube of toothpaste in the other. He says: Which is the
better time to read Dostyevsky? Winter?

He sprays the windex.

Hobo: Or Spring?

He squeezes toothpaste out of the tube.

Japanese girl: Spring!
Hobo: You are correct.

Christ, I love that site. Between that and Alien Loves Predator I get my vicarious NYC kicks.

Vancouver doesn't get that nutty, but I did hear this about three years ago:

Two stoned guys sitting in the back of the 17 Downtown bus this morning:

Guy 1: "D'you see that? Barry Manilow's coming? Remember him? He's coming, I read it in the paper. D'you remember him? Barry Manilow? From the 70's?"
Guy 2: "He's a fishdink."
Guy 1: "Yeah, that's right. But he's coming here. He's coming to Vancouver. You know how I know that? Knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom and knowledge."

My favourite overheard in Vancouver quote was in the bathroom of a gastown club:

Sketchy girl #1: "Like I ordinarily wouldn't be worried, but you know, today's like, 9/11, you know, like 9/11..."

Sketchy girl #2: "So was the guy like Persian or something?"

Sketchy girl #1: "Yeah he was TOTALLY Persian. But I feel bad, but you know I had to call 911. You know, like 911, 9/11. But I'm totally not like that. I am NOT like that. I have shaved my pubic hair into the shape of a lotus flower, like, I have a tattoo of an Eastern religious symbol. I would have LOVED to have lived in ancient Mesopotamia."

I don't think you posted the stuff about the lotus and ancient Mesopotamia back when you wrote about this!

I totally did because I just cut-and-paste it from my memories! The ancient Mesopotamia part is the best part... it's such a random thing to hear out of the mouth of a speed freak. This is why goths shouldn't be allowed to do yoga.

damn, that is both depressing and hilarious for so many reasons.

Also, like, lotus flower? seriously?

Yeah the lotus weirds me out too, but it must be a Vancouver thing.

Oh, man... Lemme guess, Sonar? I guess this has to be the laid-back left coast variant of "I'm not racist, but..."

Speaking of gastown clubs, holy crap, you joined [livejournal.com profile] new_wave_affair! That was my night!

Nope, if that was your night, then this was, in fact, at your night. Small world. (I seem to recall your icon/t-shirt.)

That's insane: you miss all the good stuff when you're stuck in the DJ booth.

Not that I would've heard it in any case if it was in the ladies' room...

Did we ever actually meet/talk at the night?

Nah, I stuck to drinking and dancing. it was a good night, my friends and I really miss it.

Thanks! I miss it too. If we start anything up again it'll be mentioned in the community.

If you're still in town on Saturday, want to do coffee? I'm running errands all over town, so I could arrange to spend a few minutes wherever is convenient for ya.

PS - What does your dad teach at Columbia? I ask because [data embargo] is in grad school there and who knows, perhaps I met him at some point. This world of the culture nerds, it is like a neighborhood block the size of the planet.

Ja!

I will be running errands around town too, so I will need a coffee break.

Dad teaches in the fiction writing department--not surprisingly, Soviet and Russian and European literature classes.

Coffee?

Also - the Indian/Pakistani greasy spoon Ghareeb Nawaz @ 2032 W. Devon. It's got $.50 chai (small cups, but still) and is a few blocks east of little India, so there's actually parking.

Yes, I'm going to be driving ALL over the city, which is why I'm making a variety of suggestions. I'll try to bring [data embargo], but she's in the last stage of her thesis and seems a bit preoccupied (can't imagine why).

am i missing something, or is there a reason why you call it "overhead" instead of "overheaRd" in new york in your "etcetera" entries?
