Because first of all you've got this this, which is kind of like a time capsule of How Everything Is Wrong much in the same way that that inexplicable thing called Jack & Bobby that is like a hyperbole of "enjoying your symptom" for Ze Left, is.

Texas oilman seeks gusher from God in Israel
Zion Oil & Gas founder using Bible to find oil

KIBBUTZ MAANIT, Israel - A Texas oilman is using his Bible as a guide to finding oil in the Holy Land.

John Brown (!!), a born-again Christian and founder of Zion Oil & Gas of Dallas, can quote chapter and verse about his latest drilling venture in Israel, where his company has an oil and gas exploration license covering 96,000 acres.

“Most blessed of sons be Asher. Let him be favored by his brothers and let him dip his foot in oil,” Brown quotes from Moses’s blessing to one of the 12 Tribes of Israel in Deuteronomy 33:24.

And just now [livejournal.com profile] saintpeg sent me this. A year ago I complained that the ongoing Sovietization wasn't realizing its full potential. I take that back. I take it all back and only hope Oedipus will spot me some knitting needles. I had to stop watching once the inner-city schoolchildren came into the picture, but if you get further than me, more power to you.

Amer-uh-kuh!! Wow, that's really, really painful.

I'm stuck on how I'm going to describe you when I repost this to my lj. "A really smart [ex-soviet? soviet ex-patriate? please help] anthropologist whose journal I read describes the following as an instance of the sovietization of America."

Not really an ex-patriot of any place. I suppose ex-Soviet is technically accurate but may be misleading as "Soviet" is "ex" now by default.

And keep in mind, there is a difference between ex-patriot and expatriate. I think I qualify as both, if you can say I was ever a patriot... OK, maybe when I was 8 and couldn't wait for the 4th of July parade.

Up until today I unequivocally maintained that the most fucked up thing I have ever seen was "The Star Wars Holiday Special." Now it may have to share its superlative title.

The worst part is, it is really representative of the Russian music video/song aesthetic. Like, if I had seen it on the Russian channel, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

You know, that Sovietisation post is classic. I must find some of those songs, especially the Kafka rewrite..

From: [identity profile] lapsedmodernist.livejournal.com
I don't know that the Kafka rewrite was an actual full-fledged rewrite as much as the satirizing of the opening verse, replacing "skazku" (fairy tale) with "Kafku" (genitive declination of "Kafka")

As for the real tunes you can probably find some over at CyberUSSR

I'm sorry for a reply lacking in all relevancy for the post, but hey! Anyhow; do you have an MSN address or something we could talk over? I have an allergic reaction to prolonged-comment-box conversations. Anyhow; mine's thesilentcynic [AT] hotmail.com - if you're interested in talking, it'd be an honour.

So, um, following your post on [livejournal.com profile] habibi's journal, I came and looked and found you were cool, and added you. Is that ok?

Of course, I just added you too.

cool, ain't it nice to find other professional people-watchers? and you went to Bolivia recently too? I've not been yet, but I do rather like knives, in a mostly-aesthetic way. I don't have a collection, but I'm quite attached to the one proper one I have.

Added. No recip. expected and I will go away nicely if preferred. My partner is a anthro, one + year out from getting the freaking letters.

Re video--if you quit at the inner city kids, you missed the cameo appearance of the Ultimate American Woman... grieving at graveside, holding Beautiful Baby American Soldier in her arms.

Added back :)

I watched the video to its glorious conclusion on the next day. You and I, we are Sisters In That Pain now.
