anthrochica dice:
I really want to get the Sims
anthrochica dice:
but I feel like I will treat it as a social experiment
apropos dice:
i am deeply frightened by realtime games that keep going even when
you're not playing
anthrochica dice:
I know what you mean.
anthrochica dice:
But I am more frightened of the Skinnerian/Milgram shock scenarios I
fear would develop in the anthrochica version of the Sims.
apropos dice:
hahaha
anthrochica dice:
seriously, it's like you get to Play Anthropology
apropos dice:
i've never played the sims or really looked at it but i think i know the idea
anthrochica dice:
or Psychology
apropos dice:
yes
anthrochica dice:
you can make them do different shit and do "ethnography"
anthrochica dice:
I mean, you could test ev-psych scenarios on them!
anthrochica dice:
cooperation/punishment etc.
anthrochica dice:
N could be what you wanted it to be!
apropos dice:
interesting stuff... more and more 'scholars' are writing on video
games, but as it's not something i'm involved with i find it a little
hard to get into
apropos dice:
i put scholars in quotes because it's such a silly word
anthrochica dice:
right, but I wouldn´t treat it as an ethnographic phenomenon, I would
play wicked ethnographic games with it!

a little later:

apropos dice:
i think software designers need to be ethnographied more
anthrochica dice:
I think ethnographied should be a verb in its own right
apropos dice:
pronounced 'eth-nog-ra-FIED"
apropos dice:
fyed
anthrochica dice:
like, Fie on them!
anthrochica dice:
or FYEd
apropos dice:
yup
apropos dice:
fyed
anthrochica dice:
excellent!
apropos dice:
apparently american english makes verbs out of nouns a lot... i was
reading this the other day
apropos dice:
i am definitely a major culprit
anthrochica dice:
I like making verbs out of names
anthrochica dice:
like Dan Rathered
apropos dice:
hahah
apropos dice:
Anna Nicoled
anthrochica dice:
ha!
apropos dice:
i don't know what that would stand for though
anthrochica dice:
or
anthrochica dice:
god what´s that idiot´s name
anthrochica dice:
Like, Ward Churchill is being Nick DeGenovaed
apropos dice:
right
anthrochica dice:
(DeGenova being an idiot)
apropos dice:
and soon others will be ward churchilled
apropos dice:
ward churchill is also being sunera thobanid
anthrochica dice:
what did she do?
apropos dice:
she gave a speech on women's rights and war & imperialism and nearly
lost her tenure
apropos dice:
and there was a boycott of the university
anthrochica dice:
oh right right
apropos dice:
this was only shortly after 9/11
anthrochica dice:
hmmm but was nick de genova suneraed?
anthrochica dice:
or is that unfair to her?

Zero-derivation (making a word from one class into a word from another class without having to tack any special ending onto it) is one of my favorite things about English.

Using ones Sims as ethnographic experiments is the only redeeming value I've ever heard of it having.

I love the Sims.

I feel so validated that someone as intellectually stimulating would think of playing the Sims as well.

I have the original computer game and the PS2 version and would love to buy Sims2 (to watch them grow up etc) but I'm afraid that when I play the Sims I forget to take care of my own life.

LOL
