Veronichka, why or why ar you teasing me like this?
You do know it's a dreadful winter in the city, do you not???
And there you are... in your little skirts and halter tops...

dude, come over! It rains, like, all the time in the jungle, but when it does not it's hot and sunny.

I know no one believes me when I say I miss the winter and everyone thinks I am just being obnxious, but I do miss it! And I miss New York more than you can possibly imagine.

But that's okay because Ya vernus' v moy gorod znakomiy do slez...

yup... just checked it...
couple of hours and couple of hundred bucks to Miami,
and then $400 more (and 4 more hours) get me to Ecuador...
you really are just a flight away...

btw, which of the islands were you on?
how did you get to the island?

Date: 2005-02-04 02:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lapsedmodernist.livejournal.com
I was on several islands: Baltra, Santa Cruz, Bartholomew, North Seymour and Playas...maybe there was another one in there and I am blanking on it right now. To get there you have to fly to either San Cristobal or Baltra and from there you go around on a boat.

It's only, like, 3.5 hours from Miami to Ecuador. Totally doable! I bet it takes you longer to get to Vancouver!

It's funny, I never knew you were such a looker.

However, not as fine as that blue footed booby! Hell, you're something, but even Helen of Troy could not hold a candle to the animals of the Galapagos...I'm decding right now to go there.

Did you see tons of little guano rings scattered about the island? That's a little shit-ring that the mother creates, and when she has more than one baby, she has to push one out of the ring. Once it's out of the guano-ring, it is dead to the mom. It may wail, it may moan, it may bleed and weep, but to no avail.

While the first baby grows up fed and plump, the child that is pushed and beaten out of the ring like a guy wearing a baseball cap at the Rainbow Room. As a result, the neglected bird almost always dies.

However, and I have to find this out, I suspect that every now and then it lives. Making it the hardiest booby you ever done saw.

Awesome, wonderful photos. I used to think that The Galapagos was somehow snake infested, but I was wrong. I kept mixing it up with the isle of Kimono.

So spiffy, dang it!

Did I say Isle of Kimono?? What is wrong with me today? I hate typos, and this comment is a nest!

I meant Komodo, for Christ's sake.

Heh, thanks for the compliment, and I agree that the blue-footed booby is superior to me and all of us in every way. I love birds in general and I think that is my new favorite creature on God's green earth (or black volcanic rocks as the case may be). I like the shitring story. It's a classic Galapagos fairy tale. They are all about evolution and how it's a bitch.

yeah, the iguanas are chummy! I also liked that it had its arm around the other one, it was like they were at the drive-in or something.

Also, I really like the iguana in the pinkish foliage. It looks like a Gregory Crewdson photograph.

Nothing I could possibly say would end up expressing half the envy and awe I feel when looking at these pictures. So I'll leave it to you to understand me when I am momentarily reduced to something as juvenile and nondescript as "Wow".

Please explain again how you were able to structure your life to have the time an cash for such frequent travels. I'm trying to figure out how I can reconfigure my own life to do the same.

Haha, what frequent travels? It's all gradschool related. I am doing fieldwork in Ecuador ATM so I get to go around Ecuador a bunch, but it's a tiny country! Like, the size of Nebraska or Nevada. One of them.

Anyway, the past two years have been sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Come summer I am again reduced to the measly University stipend which means I need to see a man about a job as soon as I get back to Estados Unidosl.

Ah, but my apartment in Greenpoint Brooklyn has my french press. And however bad Polish coffee is, it can´t be worse than Nescafe instant I have been subjected to here. With powdered milk.

awesome. the sea lions are my favorite. I, for some inexplicable reason, feel like kin to the ones you've pictured. I feel their troubles; I know their eventual triumph.

that's a kickass camera. and you seem to have a great knack for using it :)

Thank you!

Are you identifying with any sea lion in particular, or all of them in general?

have been enjoying your photography, adventures and political rants for a while (thank you!!)...

but these particular beauties bring me out of the lurker shell to ask a question.

I'm involved in developing a role-playing game for children with a concept of a sentient mother-tundra... these photographs are just so inspiring for various scenes and/or visual resources.
I don't know what the form of the final game will take, but could I ask your permission for inspirational use, and ask what would be involved in making "actual" use (board of education type) of your photography?

Hi, nice to "meet" you!

I´m glad you like the photos. This batch seems to be particularly popular. "Sentient mother Tundra"--that sounds really interesting, can you elaborate a bit more?

As to actually using my photos...Lordy, I don't know what the protocol for that is! I do video semi-professionally, but photography is just a hobby, so I have no idea how that works. You probably know better than me! How does such copyright dispensation usually transpire?
