I was driving into Cambridge today to meet
congogirl for lunch. I didn't turn somewhere I ought to have turned, and was trying to recreate a map or at least a trembling compass in my head, and all of a sudden there was a gust of wind (very strangely,
theophile is now sitting next to me, staring at me typing this entry, reading the screen and saying "go on, go on, I'm on the edge of my seat" or something to that effect) and clusters of yellow leaves swirled violently across the road and through my field of vision. At the same time, in under thirty seconds, three cars changed their lanes very quickly and without signalling, and it seemed like they, too, were being swirled and thrown by the same wind that did not discriminate between the cars and the leaves.
