These are brilliant. What year are they from? (And what does "don't rest on the rails" mean?)

Date: 2004-09-29 11:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lapsedmodernist.livejournal.com
they are from various decades...some are from the 20s/30s...some are later, like 50s and 60s...there isn't much historical development or artistic growth per se in social realism...
uh, don't rest on the rails means just that...the rails aren't a good place to sit and relax...hence the surreality.

you will find many, many more here...let me know if you want any particular translations

#2 is so oedipal it isn't funny. No wait, it's still funny.

And one should always take care of the breasts. I don't need a poster to remind me of that, but if I were in charge of the Department of Posters, I would make sure the word got out.

perhaps you can take this poster and Pass It Forward.

Were these still around when you were growing up, or was this just a general bakground which produced the adults of yesteryear... who then passed this strangeness on to you?

oh they were around...or others like them were around...in doctors offices, kindergardens and the like.

I don't know how international orders go, but I am sure it's a possibility. Or you can just blow them up in photoshop and print them...the resolution might be crappy, though.

These are LOVELY. But... how is one supposed to take care of the breasts? And... and... and... if male strength is to help women, what are those dice about and... and... oooo the second to last one, the second to last one! An empire of anthropologists!

yeah, the dice are kind of really inexplicable...unless...they are a "critique"
like, men, what are you doing screwing off and playing dice?! go help women!

is it dice or is it dominoes? because dominoes would most certainly make more sense.

ummmm...

I think you're right, it's a domino. Now THAT explains everything!

TALENT HITS THE ROAD vs. ALL ROADS OPEN TO TALENT

But what does "TALENT HITS THE ROAD vs. ALL ROADS OPEN TO TALENT" mean?
From: [identity profile] lapsedmodernist.livejournal.com
well, the literal translation is "the road of talent" on the left and "roads to talent!" meaning...ok, the left part of the picture represents the Dickensonian West, where a boy cannot develop his potential as a a musician but is doomed instead to wander dark rainy streets while a whiskey bar glows seedily in the background, but in Soviet Russia talent is cultivated and the boy is happy and playing his violin and can afford a watch. I actually have that one in my living room. It's awesome.

about those gay boys who bought bikes - was that a joint account, or separate accounts? i mean, how progressive was the soviet union when it came to domestic partnership/gay rights?

if no one else will say anything, i have to: while you were developing your sense of the absurd, your father had to come home each day and giggle in delight at seeing your cherubic face.
