What's the last thing you ate? Grapes and Rocinante cheese.
What's your favorite cheese? Fresh mozzarella, Grurier.
What's your favorite fish? Tuna is Sushi, Salmon in many other forms.
What's your favorite fruit? Apples. I would say grapes, but they are berries...or are they?
When, if ever, did you start liking olives? I get cravings for olives three times a year on the average. The first time it happenned I was at a London theater and the bartender was nice enough to give me a bunch of olives sans martinis. I do have fondness for black olives with pits.
When, if ever, did you start liking beer? Well, I started drinking it in high school but I started really liking it once I figured out which beer I really liked. In college it was pretty much PBR and Bud all the time, since quantity trumped quality. But my sophomore and junior year I spent a lot of time in England and discovered that I really, really liked Guinness. My senior year of college I discovered Magic Hat #7, a Vermont-brewed beer that made its way onto our Ohio campus occasionally and was an alcoholic delicacy. I still drank cheap beer at parties, but started being choosy in what I bought for myself. I learned that I liked Red Stripe and Negro Mondelo, that I liked to chase whiskey with corona and that pale ales weren't my thing as a rule. It wasn't until I moved to NYC, though, that I discovered my favorite beer of all time--Brooklyn Lager.
When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish? I think I always liked it. They weren't really a diet staple in Soviet Russia, and I actually don't remember when I started eating shellfish regularly, but I don't remember not liking it, ever.
What was the best thing your mum/dad/guardian used to make? My mom makes kletski soup--kletski being Tartar dumplings, like distant cousins of Matza balls. She also makes the most amazing fruit salad that never tastes the same when I do it, even if I use all the same ingredients.
What's the native specialty of your home town? What is my home town? In Moscow I suppose it would be borsht and kvas (lightly fermented carbonated drink); in Chicago we've got deep-dish pizza, in New York, I don't know. The industrial-flavored hot dog?
What's your comfort food? Mashed potatoes, cream of soups.
What's your favorite type of chocolate? Milk.
How do you like your steak? Medium rare. I'd probably like it rare if I wasn't afraid of salmonella.
How do you like your burger? see above.
How do you like your eggs? Over easy but again, with the salmonella fear. I also really like hardboiled eggs, though.
How do you like your potatoes? Mashed with lots of butter and garlic.
How do you take your coffee? I go through phases. Right now I take it with a mixture of half-and-half and regular milk, and no sugar.
How do you take your tea? Always plain, unless I have a migraine or one of my low blood pressure spells, in which case extra strong with lots of sugar.
What's your favorite mug? I have this Christmas-themed mug that I'm fond of. It features a snowman benevolently looking at a girl who is looking into a store window. The snowman is thisclose to looking lecherous but somehow does not. But I'm not, like, obsessed with this mug, or anything.
What's your biscuit or cookie of choice? I don't eat cookies that much because in general I don't eat sweets that much; I prefer fruit. But when I do eat cookies, I guess I like those tea biscuits that have a layer of chocolate on top. Also ginger men; I like to bite their heads off.
What's your ideal breakfast? I don't do breakfast.
What's your ideal sandwich? Fresh mozzarella with arugula and sun-dried tomatoes (the sweet kind) with olive oil on sourdough baguette; it's my "usual" at The Garden.
What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)? Usually if it involves fresh mozzarella or goat cheese it's fine by me. I'll eat any pizza, though, because I usually eat pizza when I am drunk, and when I am drunk I will eat anything.
What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)? Again, see above re: sweet things, but I really like cherry pies.
What's your ideal salad? I really like Greek salad with lots of feta but no anchovies. Anchovies look like eyebrows and are gross.
What food do you always like to have in the fridge? grapes and cheese.
What food do you always like to have in the freezer? Frozen fries with garlic and spices, frozen berries for smoothies.
What food do you always like to have in the cupboard? organic peanut butter, stove-top popcorn, jam, honey.
What spices can you not live without? garlic, black pepper.
What sauces can you not live without? soy sauce.
Where do you buy most of your food? The Garden, some items at Garden of Eden, the basics usually at Key Foods.
How often do you go food shopping? A couple of times a week.
What's the most you've spent on a single food item? I don't know. Occassionally I will spring for scallops or lobster. Very occasionally.
What's the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own (excluding 'white goods')? I don't know what "white goods" are and it sounds vaguely creepy, but maybe my super-kettle?
What's the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen? My French press broke, so I bought a new one a few months ago.
What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without? My French press.
How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients? 3-4 times a week.
What's the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients? This really amazing meal Patryce taught me how to make with spinach, carrots, onions, peppers, dates and pine nuts in masala sauce.
What's the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor? I usually don't, so I don't remember.
What's the last time you ate something you'd picked in the wild? Cherry tomatoes on Nashawena over Labor Day.
Place in order of preference (greatest to least): Sushi, Thai, Chinses, French Italian, Indian
Place in order of preference: whiskey, vodka, gin, brandy, light rum, dark rum (I did not rank tequila at all because I will not drink it under any circumstances after my sophomore year of college I had 14 shots of it in one night and set my friend's pants on fire)
Place in order of preference: garlic, lime, basic, ginger, caramel, mint, anise
Place in order of preference: watermelon, cherry, apple, strawberry, orange, banana, pineapple
Place in order of preference: sex, the internet, movies, food, fashion, sport
Bread and spread: little pumpkernickel squares with butter and jam.
What's your fast food restaurant of choice, and what do you usually order? I eat fast food maybe twice a year. If I have to, I will eat Subway, where I get a turkey 6-inch. Oh, and I will get curly fries from any place that has them (like Arby's).
Pick a city. What are the three best dining experiences you've had in that city? Let's say New York. Thalia, which is a chichi restaurant somewhere in the 50s that my mom took me to for my birthday last year, pizza at Frankie's on 1st and 1st and various specials at Diner.
What's your choice of tipple at the end of a long day? A glass of Protocolo.
What's the next thing you'll eat? For the last couple of weeks I've been eating a cheese Danish with my coffee after I get to school; so probably that.

i've been consuming the brooklyn black chocolate stout at times lately. i saw something about the brewery on tv and am lucky enough to have a great store nearby that has just about everything. haven't tried the lager yet, but since the stout is only bottled for the winter, i'll have to switch soon.
