Oh my god, there is an online dating site for Ayn Rand admirers. I think it's hilarious because between ages of 16 to 18, Ayn Rand played a large role in facilitating my relationships and hookups. In fact, my first boyfriend and I got together because he used the pretext of needing the questions for the annual Fountainhead essay competition to get my phone number. The first time he kissed me, was immediately after flipping through my worn copy of Atlas Shrugged that was peppered with graphs illustrating the range of political philosophies, with fascism and communism converging. Several friends I had got together with their boyfriends/girlfriends while discussing the finer points of objectivism. Boys strutted around trying to be Howard Roarks and girls tormented themselves trying to play Dominique Francon to them. Dude, when you are 16, boys who like Ayn Rand are hot. [livejournal.com profile] remsaverem will back me on this, I know.

That's hilarious. Though I had already read The Fountainhead at the time, I have to admit that a great deal of motivation to finish Atlas Shrugged involved a girl (following dating a Marxist, so I guess that was my dialectic dating experiment).

I wonder if anyone on that service is outside the 16-18 range anyway.

I don't think 16-18 year olds would use the site...they meet each other at Debate Tournaments and in Objectivist book clubs after school. The site is prolly for people who never grew out of it, or are having an atavistic resurgence.

You already know my opinion of Ayn Rand, but I have to tell you that is a very cool icon

What's your opinion of Ayn Rand?
I sort of respect her, in the same way I respect Busby Berkeley or Frank Capra.

man, can you imagine Ayn Rand's version of "It's a Wonderful Life"?

Hahaha, for me despite the feature-length biography I watched courtesy of, yes, my mother (my mother, folks!) I still imagine Ayn Rand as a potent cross between Martha Stewart and Evil Willow, if you know what I mean. I'm not sure I know what I mean, but then again MY MOTHER just called in the middle of this comment informing me (incorrectly, I'm 75% sure, but it took half and hour to establish that) that a friend of mine had just died. Anyway, I always hated Ayn Rand the way I hate women who go to renaissance fairs and appropriate "paganism" and call themselves "wenches", just a gut-level aesthetic contempt for the trappings of fascism, which I claim to be able to sense (and can wank meaningfully about) on every page of Atlas Shrugged. For some reason while I was contemplating my friend's potential death the comment thread made me think of people who perform Madrigals, which made me think of a certain blond friend of mine from upstate school who used to invite me on "nondenominational retreats", aka fun with fundamentalist christians, and her point was that since they were nondenominational and anyone (yes, nuncstans, even jews!) was allowed to attend then how could there be anything but snobbery keeping me from joining her. And the difficult-to-articulate-without-a-long-preliminary-definition-of-POWER BUT that always kept welling up in response is exactly how I feel about Ayn Rand's objectivism: not just shoddy philosophy, but like something wiccan this way comes... fascist aesthetics+cereal box morality+rape/race fantasies=AYN RAND=Martha Stewart+Evil Willow-cool.

I'm sorry, it's been a difficult T-day so far.

I can imagine the big musical number, with one hundred nordic ubermensche dancing in precise arithmetic progression to the strain of "auld lange syne".

thank you. the icon is because i felt very wintery. i really like your new icon too. do you feel wintery too? it also looks a little like a variation on St. George motif. i know what you think of Ayn Rand, and it's not like i am an acolyte anymore, i just thought the dating site is hilarious.

hahaha....16 year old boys who read Rand would be cool, if only because it would mean they weren't completely brainless...only misguided in their choice of economic philosopy to pander to...actually all 16 year old boys pandering to poltical philosophies are misguided because their views are lacking nuance...I, for instance, was an anarchist at 16 and read Chomsky and 'tried' to read Bakunin. I've got a couple of Rand's nonficiton works on my shelf, and i seriously think she would have profited from owning a vibrator and being slipped a tablet of Ecstasy, of only just once.

i think it's obvious from ayn rand's fiction that she had a serious case of rape fantasies that she projected onto her female heroines, so i don't know that a vibrator would do the trick unless it was attached to an adonis-like man with a granite-hard phallus making her fall in love with him by fucking her despite her protestations.

see, i'm basing my over dramatic demonization of her purely on her objectivist 'philosophy'...because i've never read her fiction. I initially came in contact with her through her heartless ramblings and was so put off that i never bothered pursuing her fiction. But perhaps i ought to give her a read...Atlas Shrugged is supposed to be monumental after all, right?

When I was 16, I think was telling young socialists about my plans to construct an outhouse over Ayn Rand's grave.
