In addition to the bombings in Istambul today, there were three attacks in Iraq--the two hotels housing Western journalists got bombed, as well as the Oil Ministry. You can find information about
the attacks on BBC, because CNN is too busy reporting the brand of toilet paper molested by Michael Jackson. The rockets that hit the Palestine hotel were launched off a donkey cart. A donkey cart, people. $87 billion budget blah blah. This is a donkey cart:

last week, one of dictionaries (american heritage?) was in the news because mcdonald's was protesting the inclusion of the word "mcjob." i'm still waiting for the term "media whore" to make it into a dictionary. until it does, we won't have a term to adequately describe the behavior of the various people and organizations who are willing to say/report anything for money.

time for me to get back to the tv -- they're about to have another late-breaking update about jackson. plus, "dateline" will spend an hour on this later with all the news we need to know.

i swear the michael jackson thing is manufactured to keep people from realizing that our campaign of liberation is going to hell in a handbasket.

whether you're serious or not, i seriously believe that the iraq attack was started by cheney and his henchmen as a distraction at the end of the summer of 2002 to take attention from the news that people's retirement money was evaporating in corporate crime, all to prevent actual reform and to win the november elections (it worked). cheney pulled the same trick back in january 2002 when the enron debacle was underway. then, right when the cries for something to be done were loudest, cheney appeared from his undisclosed location to yell "wolf!", uh, i mean "TERRORISTS!". the media whores fell in line.

of course, shrub had decided by march 2002 (almost a year before he said he had "made up his mind") that he was going to launch an assault, but the timing for when they were going to begin the propaganda was effected by the fact that their crimes were in danger of being prosecuted.

many of their apologists will claim that the repubs "sincerely" believe in what they have said, but you'll notice that they always "sincerely" believe the viewpoints that benefit them and "sincerely" disbelieve the viewpoints that do not benefit them.

the interesting thing to me about the "campaign of liberation" is that they are at least paying lip service to doing the right thing (and which was discussed in nuncstans's LJ a few months ago), which is to "give" sovereignty to the iraqis (as though the assault & occupation was in any way legitimate -- did you see the news item this past week where R. Perle admitted that the assault was illegal under international law, but "the right thing to do"?). they are doing it in typical shrub fashion, trying to sleaze in some puppet gov't, but political advisor rove is getting nervous about the calendar, so suddenly the political calculation is pushing the balance to "get the hell out before it effects nov 2004" instead of "let's get a puppet in place so we can cash in." i didn't expect this action before january.

if shrub wins, i expect the draft to be reinstated, because they won't give a damn about the political ramifications of that any more, and they'll want soldiers for the next war (korea), plus for rotations in iraq. in the meantime, they'll say that the all-volunteer army is great, perfect, couldn't want anything more (rumsfeld will find some memorable way to phrase it). this is much like shrub's dad downplaying the savings&loan crisis, only to fund a (hundreds of billions) buyout shortly after being sworn in, eliminating savings&loans, to the benefit of repub bank owners, and like the trip that william casey (later the cia director under reagan) made to france to meet iraqis immediately before the 1980 election in order to guarantee that there would be no "october surprise" that would help carter (of course, the hostages were released within hours after reagan was sworn in).

"those who don't learn from history are condemned to be screwed by those who will screw you again and again."
