Good Morning Iraq

There was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it announcement on MSNBC early this morning about US dropping 2,000 lb. bombs, it cut to commercial and was not picked up. For hours there were no links about it, but I did find a story about Bremer being "ordered" back to DC. CNN finally just "broke" it, albeit with a quote that "This is very much like the bombings we've been seeing in the past several days..." Seems like The Pentagon ordered a complete press blackout on Friday.

there have been a number of reports about the use of 500 lb bombs, particularly in the area where the "first" helicopter was downed last week.

on the minus side, "nightline's" ted koppel said last night that about 2,000 americans had been wounded in iraq. other reports put the number at 7,500 (los angeles times, nov 9). how can nightline be so far off?

on the plus side, "nightline" reported tonight about the toledo blade's report about american soldiers in "tiger company" killing scores of vietnamese civilians, so the "mainstream" media hasn't completely ignored this atrocity. why aren't the responsible soldiers being put in jail? i doubt that the coverage by "democracy now!" effected koppel&co, but the new yorker's comment last week must have had some influence (but not on the nytimes or wash post, both of whom mostly follow the "if we didn't write about it first, then it didn't happen" rule)

BTW, here is the toledo blade story:

http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=SRTIGERFORCE/

eric boehlert reports in salon that peter jennings at abc saw the new yorker comment by seymour hersh (who first reported about the my lai massacre, which was a smaller massacre than that reported by the toledo blade), and that's how nightline ended up covering it. jennings was a reporter in vietnam.
