So check this out. Since I can't be with my near and dear tomorrow, I took measures. (Actually my nearest and dearest best friend [livejournal.com profile] totalvirility with whom I was living during the 2000 election, in our Brooklyn Apartment above the Worst Chinese Restaurant Ever fell asleep that night before the Great Ambiguity started and I was transfixed to the TV by myself anyway). So I got a room in a small hotel with a cable feed for tomorrow night. I got alcohol. I feel terribly Leaving Las Vegas except with the election in lieu of suicide.

In Central Florida Jesus is voting for Bush. We will have until tomorrow to see if he is in the "majority" (ha!), but, as I just wrote to [livejournal.com profile] apropos, I am preparing myself for the possibility that this will be a long drawn out legal dispute and tomorrow night will be outrageous but anticlimactic.

I doubt I will sleep tonight.

Sleep well tonight if you can. You'll need all your powers of insomnia for tomorrow. And so will we all.

at present, i'm worried about what will happen in iraq regardless of whether shrub is redefeated or not. his history is that he always choses a course of action worse than people expect. and rational arguments have no effect on him -- he and cheney will rationalize anything, denying facts, projecting their behavior on their critics, and saying black is white. did you see the recent report about the study in iraq that states 100,000 (far above what iraqbodycount.org has counted from published reports) more civilians have died since the invasion began than would have otherwise?

As you can see from an email my friend sent me from Baghdad today, it's more like 200,000.

off-topic, but

Thanks for the postcard! I love that "la chispa" seems to boil down to common sense, or maybe street smarts, in Ecuadorian slang. Terrific!

hang in there. it looks like it might not rain afterall in OH and PA, though it's chilly again. things look good in someways, bad in others that you know all too much about. no matter what happens, good things will come out of all of this. take care.

foxnews (motto: "all the lies we can fit in one broadcast") just projected that, with 1.3% of the votes in, bush has been reelected emperor-for-life. they're encouraging all democrats to stay home "if you know what's good for you." and they say that tuesday at noon, herr bush will announce the new hit reality show for fox called "liberal hunt." same principle as a fox hunt (get it?) except this time they strip down one liberal at a time, and chase, capture, and beat him/her to death. herr bush says he can't decide who to go after first - kerry or michael moore.

we shall overcome.

I guess he will probably send Cheney after Michael Moore, what with all those Halliburton refs in the movie...how useful to have a smart, conniving sidekick!

Unfortunately, though I planned an early breakfast party (6am) at the house of the one person I know with Telesat TV, it looks as though most of the results will actually be in by 4am--ACK! Too late to stay up, to early to get up...that Leaving Las Vegas feeling is starting to come over me.

I was saying to a friend this morning that tonight will be the first night ever that i will regret not having a television and might end up going to a nearby neighborhood bar to get drunk and watch how things will develop. So, in your drunken stupor tonight, if you feel some other drunken hand getting a hold of yours—it’ll be mine…

Now, enough sentimentally and off to the voting booth…

yes. I think so. I am assuming the hotel room I got has a phone (the hotel room turns out to be an excellent idea as for some reason there is no running water in my boarding house now).

yeah, that was my reaction too. We live in The Onion. The Onion is no longer funny, it's just True. (unlike SNL which is just no longer funny).

I'll try to give you a call when we know the outcome (if I have time to check email). Okay... gotta go. Fingers, toes and eyes crossed, Virgen de Guadalupe print in the living room libated and copaled...

Hey, did you know that since 1936, the Washington Redskins have accurately predicted the outcome of presidential elections? If the Redskins win their last home game before the elections, the incumbent keeps the White House. If they lose, the challenger takes the election? True.

Last Sunday Green Bay beat the 'Skins at home. Take heart.

While yesterday I was ranting against Medieval Democrats divining victory from the coffeegrounds of precedents or just the annoying Visualize Victory meme sounds to me like a faith-based community trope, one that goes "see no evil" vis-a-vis Diebold, perhaps in a few hours I will turn Medieval too. But the first thing that comes to mind in terms of the Skins is that passage in Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are Dead

Still, thank you for trying to cheer me up.

I wish I were there. I hope you find a good place to watch it. If all fails, I am sure all bars will have their TVs on, and people will be transfixed. I had my going away party the night of the first debate, and the TV in the bar was showing it, and when I walked in you could hear a pin drop even though the bar was packed.

Or... how about this? Four young people in black hoodies rolled up to my polling place at 7:45 this morning. All smiling, all excited to vote. Their car, of course, bore a Kerry sticker.

Damn, Florida is my least favorite state in the union, but I think I would go to Orlando just for the Holy Land Experience. It looks almost as good as the Wax Museum in LA, or the Museum of Jurassic Technology, for that matter.

Ah, but do you know about the Land of Canaan board game?
http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/boardgame_settlers_canaan.htm

and the Temple of Solomon board game?
http://www.redemption.com/boardgame_solomons_temple.htm

Entertainment is closer to home than Florida.

And semi-relatedly, National Geographic just ran an "assignment" "Was Darwin Wrong?" and I don't think they meant it in a Chomskian (via Arrow, I am not entirely clear on that argument myself) epistemological critique-of-evolution based on the perfection of language way.

Um, and also Seventh Heaven had a Very Special Voting episode.
