Recently I came across this video from one of the perestoika-era rock bands of my early adolescence, Nautilus Pompilius (named after Nemo's ship in "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"). The band did not fade into obscurity as many others of that time did, but evolved and, I think, is still well-known today.

Anyway, they have a song called "Krylya"--meaning "Wings"--and, apparently, they have a music video for it.

Now, I watched it, and was confused. As best as I can tell, the story told in the video is about a building where rapes happen, and a woman running from and fighting off a rapist. I have never ever seen such a scenario in an American video. Have you? It seemed really strange, like somehow it crossed away from the boundary of some inherent entertainment that even the most somber and sad music videos are supposed to provide. I suppose there are specific videos with a message, like System of a Down's "Boom" and Sarah McLachlan's annoying "World on Fire," that are not meant to be "entertaining"--but there you have a direct correspondence between the lyrics and the images.

Here--well, I will translate the lyrics:

you take off the evening dress,
facing the wall,
and I see fresh scars
on your back, smooth as velvet
I want to cry from the pain,
Or to forget myself in dreams,
By the way, where are your wings
That I liked so much?
Where are your wings
That I liked so much? (x2)

Before we had time,
Now we have things to do,
To ptove that the strong consumes the weak,
To prove that soot is white,
We all lost something
In this insane war,
By the way, where are your wings
That I liked so much?
Where are your wings
That I liked so much? (x2)

I don't ask how much money you have,
Or how many husbands,
I see that you are frightened of open windows
And of the top floors
And if tomorrow a fire starts,
And the building will be engulfed in flames,
We will perish without these wings
That I liked so much

Where are your wings
That I liked so much? (x2)

and here is the video

what do you think? is there something inherently unheimlich about the video? And if so because of the visual story in the video, or because of the lack of real correlation between the images and the story in the song, which is as vague as a Leonard Cohen song narrative, but still vaguely illuminates a certain narrative, and it's not a narrative about rape.

Thoughts?
