Benjamin constructed a binary of what to do with images from the past that flash up--either they are to be used in the project of revolution
or
they disappear back into the past, forever lost.
that's a false binary. it's diachronic. Benjamin had nothing to say about being trapped in a synchronic moment, like a fly in amber, with images from the past always flashing everywhere like lightnings in the Bermuda triangle. It's a frozen moment, like the anti-Faustian "ah linger on, thou art so fair"

what i remember from my dreams last night:

i was with my mother and father near our old apartment complex in moscow. we were walking around, it was snow, my father had his arm around me. All of a sudden with saw two bears, they were pretty big and lightly colored, so we ran into a building that was not ours, but across from it.

I was with my family at some hotel somewhere, something questionable or illegal was going on. I snuck out and ran away, somewhere, somehow in the process I acquired a white puppy and took it with me. I was trying to leave the country, and had to take a huge bus to the airport. the bus had three rows of seats and was as wide as an airplane. then i was distrubingly near an airplane, then i was home (not sure where that was) with the puppy. everyone was mad at me (especially claire, but she also stopped being mad at me relatively quickly) but everyone wanted to play with the puppy. the puppy had sharp, ugly teeth.
